KOUGA residents, who have tampered with their electricity meters, have been granted a further six weeks to apply for amnesty from fines and penalties payable for faulty meters. <\/p>\n
The extension was approved by the Kouga Council at a virtual meeting on Monday, December 13 \u2013 for the second time. The resolution will take the closing date for applications to January 31, 2022. <\/p>\n
This follows on numerous requests from residents and business owners for another extension.<\/p>\n
Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, said the amnesty period had originally been approved for the period September 1, to September 30, this year, after which it had been extended for another month to October 31. <\/p>\n
Hendricks urged all residents whose meters have been tampered with \u2013 including unsealed meters and malfunctioning meters (running units up instead of down \u2013 are urged to come forward and use the amnesty period as a window of opportunity to rectify their meters. <\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the amnesty period, all meters will be inspected and should residents be found guilty of the above, they will be fined,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cRegistering the tampered meters during the amnesty period will help residents to avoid penalties such as reconnection fees and average monthly consumption charges for the period the meter has not been vending.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Hendricks, should residents fail to apply for amnesty and be found guilty of meter tampering, council will immediately terminate the supply of services.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe municipality, furthermore, reserves the right to lay criminal charges and to take any other legal action against vandalism and theft,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Hendricks said this process will ensure that future revenue is generated and that the electricity losses are addressed.<\/p>\n
The amnesty application form is available at all municipal offices.<\/p>\n
Completed forms can be submitted to the Kouga Municipality\u2019s electrical department at St Croix Street in Jeffreys Bay and Assissi Drive in St Francis Bay, as well as at the Humansdorp Traffic Department.<\/p>\n
