Close to 1 000 Kouga residents are set to benefit from a long overdue housing project in the region \u2013 after first being approved in 2009.<\/p>\n
The construction of 990 subsidy (RDP) houses at Silvertown (previously known as Stofwolk) in Hankey has taken a major step forward, with the donation of Erf 245 by PPC LTD (Pretoria Portland Cement) to Kouga Municipality, during a ceremonial handover on Monday, April 25.<\/p>\n
This much-needed donation increased the number of houses to be built from 728 to 990.<\/p>\n
The elderly and disabled residents will be the first to benefit from the project. <\/p>\n
Kouga Municipality Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, said the municipality was pleased to be part of a project that would change people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe people of Kouga, and those of Hankey in particular, have been waiting for a very long time to be provided with decent housing. It is quite momentous to be part of the occasion where we start the realisation of those dreams,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the near future, there will be families here . . . there will be children here . . . there will be people growing up here, making memories and living a better life. And PPC LTD has contributed to that.<\/p>\n

According to PPC head of human resources for South Africa and Botswana, Ndima Rawana, the donation of the 4.9ha of land aligns perfectly with their ideal of partnering with local government, and in doing so, empowering local residents to experience an improved quality of life. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are committed to the development of communities and to grow the local economy \u2013 especially through land ownership, the bedrock of any successful community,\u201d said Rawana. <\/p>\n
He said that PPC LTD is committed to work with all sectors of government and public, as well as relevant stakeholders, to ensure a meaningful contribution towards vital reconstruction and development projects by donating of their own land to help build communities.<\/p>\n
According to Hendricks, the installation of civil services infrastructure \u2013 including sanitation, water, roads, and stormwater \u2013 are currently in progress at a cost of more than R40,5 million.<\/p>\n
The completion date is set for December this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe project is one of five housing projects currently underway in the region, joining Kruisfontein (391 units completed in December 2019) and Pellsrus (220 units completed in December 2020),\u201d said Hendricks.<\/p>\n
Future projects include the construction of 200 RDP houses in Ocean View, Jeffreys Bay for the elderly and disabled \u2013 marking the first phase of the project. <\/p>\n
\u201cConstruction is set to start in the 2021\/ 2022 financial year. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe project forms part of the Ocean View 1 500 housing project, of which the internal services have already been completed at a cost of close to R50 million,\u201d said Hendricks. \u201cIt is one of 10 projects approved by the DoHS for Kouga in 2009 and which were delayed due to insufficient bulk infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Also on the housing map is the long-awaited construction of 139 RDP houses in Arcadia in Humansdorp. <\/p>\n
