NSRI<br \/>\nand SA National Parks then launched a rescue operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">NSRI Storms River and NSRI Oyster Bay duty crews responded<br \/>\nwith NSRI rescue craft. SA National Park rangers and an SA National Parks Vet also responded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">It is suspected that the leopard, a female estimated to be<br \/>\nabout three years old, may have fallen down the cliff and was stranded on a<br \/>\ncliff face near the water&#8217;s edge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">NSRI Oyster Bay\u2019s Rescue 36 Bravo, Caltex Challenger 2, and<br \/>\nNSRI Storms River Rescue 46, Spirit of Tsitsikamma, were launched, accompanied<br \/>\nby SA National Park rangers and their veterinary surgeon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">&#8220;A kayak and a Stokes basket stretcher were taken along as<br \/>\nit was expected that after darting the leopard, she may go into attack mode and<br \/>\nmay very well land in the water.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:12pt;\">On arrival on the scene, in an incoming tide, the leopard<br \/>\nwas found to already be on the water&#8217;s edge with part of her body submerged as<br \/>\nthe wave sets came in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">&#8220;Under the guidance of SA National Park rangers and their vet, the leopard was darted and she immediately swam towards the boats. The<br \/>\nkayak was positioned alongside the rescue craft. The leopard appeared to attack<br \/>\nthe kayak when a rope was able to be lassoed around her neck to prevent her<br \/>\nfrom drowning,&#8221; Van Rensburg explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">He added that the leopard was pulled onto the kayak using the rope and<br \/>\nthen recovered onto the NSRI rescue craft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">&#8220;Subdued by the dart, the leopard was brought to Storms River<br \/>\nMouth and secured into the Stokes basket stretcher, loaded into a vehicle and<br \/>\ntaken to SANParks in Gqeberha.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:12pt;\">With a fractured femur and multiple injuries, sadly, despite<br \/>\nextensive efforts to save the leopard, she was humanely euthanised by the vets,&#8221; he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">&#8220;NSRI commend our NSRI rescue teams from Oyster Bay and<br \/>\nStorms River and we commend the SA National Parks team for the incredible<br \/>\nefforts employed to try to save the leopard.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:12pt;\">The NSRI Storms River rescue crew are all SA National
