SOME 684 soccer players, 240 rugby stars, 150 touch rugby enthusiasts, and 80 professional netball players will battle it out for top honours in the 2022 Kouga Mayor\u2019s Cup tournament this year.<\/p>\n
Add to the mix 200 gymnasts and 160 chess players, as well as 90 golfers, 60 cricketers and 45 bowls players. Not to forget about the marathon runners, skateboarding experts, pool players, surfers, and tennis stars.<\/p>\n
More than 2 000 athletes, representing 14 sporting codes \u2013 will all be battling it out for crowning glory.<\/p>\n
At the official launch, at the St Francis Links on Thursday, June 9, Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, said, \u201cWe would like to thank all the sports associations and clubs for joining us to present the Kouga Mayor\u2019s Cup. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s good to see the tournament growing stronger every year.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are more than sports people. You are members of a broken society. Thank you for your hard work and the sacrifices you make, including your weekends, to keep your teams together.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the aim of the tournament \u2013 themed \u201cShaping the Future\u201d \u2013 was to facilitate sports development and encourage participation among people from all walks of life. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s about showing communities the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle. Not only is playing sport fun, but it is also a great way of achieving social cohesion and building community spirit.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe future of sport across the Kouga region will remain a priority, as we continue to focus on the development of a strong and firm sports culture in and around the area.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hendricks said the tournament would run until the end of July.<\/p>\n
The matches will be hosted at different venues across Kouga, to allow as many communities as possible the opportunity to participate and support the programme.<\/p>\n
Most of the final matches will take place at Mentorskraal in Jeffreys Bay on Friday, July 30.<\/p>\n
