Yesterday, June 22,
\nthe Humansdorp Magistrate Court convicted and sentenced two cable thieves to 15
\nyears direct imprisonment for damaging essential infrastructure \u2013 a first for
\nthe region.<\/span><\/p>\n

A case of damage to
\nessential infrastructure was registered at the Jeffreys Bay Police Station,
\nafter Kouga Municipality\u2019s law enforcement team, in conjunction with Kouga\u2019s
\nelectrical department and SAPS, confiscated about 60m of stolen electrical
\ncables at the Pellsrus Caravan Park last year.<\/p>\n

During the
\ninvestigation it was established that the copper cables were stolen from Kouga
\nMunicipality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three suspects were
\narrested, after which one suspect was acquitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cKouga Municipality
\nwelcomes the harsh sentencing of the cable thieves as cable theft has a huge
\nnegative impact on service delivery,\u201d said Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio
\nHendricks. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a municipality,
\nwe will do everything in our power to ensure that anyone who damages our
\ninfrastructure vandalism will be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAny person who
\nunlawfully and intentionally tampers with, damages, or destroys essential
\ninfrastructure \u2013 relating to energy, transport, water, sanitation, and
\ncommunication \u2013 is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a period of
\n30 years imprisonment or a fine of up to R100 million.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This is according
\nto the Criminal Matters Amendment Act, 2015.<\/p>\n

Hendricks expressed
\nhis gratitude to the municipality\u2019s law enforcement team who are doing
\nexceptional work in the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery officer
\nshould be lauded for their selfless dedication to the communities they serve
\nand their commitment to making these areas safer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
