Soup kitchens in the Kouga region can now apply for temporary basic social relief assistance from Kouga Municipality.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe municipality is set to once again take hands with local soup kitchens to help address the escalating shortage of food in homes,\u201d said Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks. <\/p>\n

\u201cMany families across the region are struggling to keep heads above water as prices of basic necessities continue to rise amid the effects of record-setting prices on fuel and soaring inflation.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdd to this the lingering consequences the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions have had on the local economy and jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that while social relief was the mandate of the Department of Social Development, as a caring government, the municipality has resolved to continue supporting social relief efforts \u2013 despite this falling outside their mandate.<\/p>\n

The municipality would mainly be assisting the soup kitchens with groceries.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time the municipality extends a lending hand to local soup kitchens and residents in need. <\/p>\n

Since March this year, the municipality donated much-needed food items to six soup kitchens in the region.<\/p>\n

In October 2020, the municipality took hands with six soup kitchens, most of which were established during the COVID-19 lockdown, to help address the escalating shortage of food in homes \u2013 benefiting over 1 000 residents. <\/p>\n

During lockdown level 5, the municipality, in partnership with community groups, also procured and delivered almost 15 000 food parcels to families in need. <\/p>\n

To apply, soup kitchens registered with the Department of Social Development, must send a detailed application to elvina@kouga.gov.za at 12:00 on Sunday, July 31.<\/p>\n

Applications must clearly state the name and address of the organisation, as well as contain a detailed description of the establishment. It must furthermore list all the immediate basic needs of the organisation, excluding appliances and kitchenware, as well as the number of residents benefiting from the specific soup kitchen. <\/p>\n
