In my tienerjare het ek bewus geraak van \u2019n man met die naam Nelson Mandela. Uit praatjies om my het ek afgelei dat hy \u2019n \u201cslegte\u201d man was, \u2019n terroris!<\/p>\n

In die tagtigerjare het ek skoolgehou by Khwezi Lomso Komprehensiewe Skool in Zwide, Gqeberha. Dit was midde in die onlustye. Die weermag het diens gedoen op die skoolgronde en personeel moes in die personeelkamer bymekaar bly. \u201cFree Mandela!\u201d, was die krete wat oral gehoor en geskryf is.<\/p>\n

Ek het nooit gedink ek sou die \u201cterroris\u201d ontmoet, of nog minder dat hy ons president sou word nie!<\/p>\n

Kort nadat hy vrygelaat is, maar voordat hy president was, het hy \u2019n sake-ontbyt op Uitenhage bygewoon. Intussen het ek \u2019n joernalis geword, met \u2019n lewendige nuuskierigheid oor die man. <\/p>\n

Met die opdrag om \u2019n foto te gaan neem vir die destydse Oosterlig<\/em><\/span>, was die opgewondenheid groot.<\/p>\n

Sy lyfwagte wou niks weet nie! Mettertyd het ek ongeduldig by \u2019n deur gaan staan aan die buitekant van die saal, wat op \u2019n skrefie oop was. Tata Madiba het my gesien en my gebaretaal verstaan. <\/p>\n

Hy het sy lyfwagte gerusgestel, sy kos weggestoot en na my gestap. <\/p>\n

My wange het begin gloei en hande het gesweet. As daar \u2019n dag was wat ek nie \u2019n blaps met die kamera moet maak nie, is dit nou!<\/p>\n

Hy het vriendelik gegroet, gevra wat my naam is, hoeveel kinders ek het en hoe hy my kan help. \u2019n Kollega van die plaaslike koerant het vinnig \u2019n foto van ons twee geneem. Dis steeds een van my kosbaarste besittings.<\/p>\n

Nelson Mandela was toe al die tyd \u2019n gawe man, sjarmant, eintlik charismaties en welsprekend. <\/p>\n

\u201cHy k\u00e1n maar president word,\u201d het ek gedink. <\/p>\n

Min het ek geweet hoeveel stories ek nog oor hom sou maak vir radio en televisie. <\/p>\n

Ek was bevoorreg om deel te kon wees van die span wat oor sy siekte en dood berig het. Dit het meegebring dat ons span telkens na sy geboorteplek, Mvezo, moes reis. <\/p>\n

Ook na Qunu waar hy as jong seuntjie gewoon het saam met sy ouers, en na Mqhekezweni waar hy as tiener by sy oom sy politieke tande geslyp het. <\/p>\n

Dit was opwindend om in sy voetspore te loop, te sien waar hy met stokke geveg het en met sy maats teen \u2019n klip afgegly het. Ook om in die verafgele\u00eb nedersetting Mqhekezweni die groot boom te sien waar die waarnemende koning van die Tembu\u2019s, Jongintaba Dalindyebo, vir Madiba vertel het van hulle voorvaders, en die jong man ge\u00efnspireer het om \u2019n bydrae te maak tot die vryheidstryd van sy mense. <\/p>\n

En die laerskool in Qunu waar \u2019n onderwyseres vir hom die naam Nelson gegee het. <\/p>\n

Internasionale radiostasies het dag en nag gebel om stories oor hom te hoor. Soos dat hy met sy eerste skooldag maar sy pa se langbroek aangetrek het, pype opgerol het en met \u2019n tou om die middel vasgemaak het.<\/p>\n

Ook dat sy landelike aftreehuis in Qunu op dieselfde plan gebou is as die huis by die Victor Verster gevangenis waar hy 14 van sy 27 jaar aangehou is tot sy vrylating. Sy gunsteling geregte was skaap- of beesafval, en umqushu<\/span> (mielies en bone), en malvapoeding sy gunsteling nagereg. <\/p>\n
