After a successful fishing competition and market day in October and November last year, the Evangelies Gereformeerde Kerk in Jeffreys Bay is one step closer to building a large church to better cater for the needs of their members.<\/p>\n

As previously reported by Kouga Express<\/span>, the Evangelies Gereformeerde Kerk hosted their first fishing competition, a catch-and-release event, from October 1 to November 30.<\/p>\n

According to the church\u2019s Ds Ruan van Vuuren, last year\u2019s fishing competition was their first and to their surprise it kicked off with about 60 entries.<\/p>\n

To enter the competition, anglers were required to buy a ticket for R200 and fish from Sundays River to Eersterivier, which saw the winners walking away with prizes worth R30 000.<\/p>\n

Van Vuuren said that they plan to contact local fishing clubs to establish better co-operation to ensure that they host their next fishing competition during a period where there are not many fishing opportunities for anglers.<\/p>\n

He further said that the collaboration with various sponsors made it worthwhile for the church to host the fishing competition again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that the event will only go from strength to strength,\u201d said van Vuuren.<\/p>\n

In addition to the competition, the church also hosted a market day on December 3, at the Newton Hall in Jeffreys Bay to raise additional fundin, which was a great success.<\/p>\n

Van Vuuren said they offered a wide variety of products and foods on the day, with the food being greatly discounted and mostly sold out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe received many compliments from visitors who congratulated us on the way in which we presented the market, and the beautiful co-operation that there was between the people of the church,\u201d said van Vuuren.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can only thank the Lord for the success of our first market day and we would like to express our thanks to the community for their support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the church has outgrown their current rented premises in Da Gama Road, the funds raised from the fishing competition and market day are earmarked for a plot of land in Jeffreys Bay, where they will erect a permanent building to serve as a church for the community, according to van Vuuren.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are satisfied with what we brought in from the fishing competition and market day,\u201d said van Vuuren.<\/p>\n

He said with the money raised they were able to offer a series of services from the world-renowned Evangelist, Dr Francois Carr, to their church members.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, van Vuuren said they plan to save the remaining funds for future projects, and to use as prize money for their next fishing competition.<\/p>\n
