The Jeffreys Bay Surf Lifesaving Club will host the club\u2019s first major event, the Lifesaving Eastern Cape Championships, alongside the Kouga Municipality, on February 25 and 26. The event will see participants as young as 8 years face off against the province\u2019s best lifesavers.<\/p>\n
According to Keaw\u00e1ne Hammond, the lifesaving club secretary, Jeffreys Bay Surf Lifesaving Club is fully endorsed by Lifesaving Eastern Cape and Lifesaving South Africa. It was established in May last year as a voluntary surf lifesaving club to introduce children in the Kouga region to the sport of lifesaving.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we established the club, we wanted to show children what fun lifesaving can be, and we wanted to give back to our community,\u201d said Hammond.<\/p>\n
As part of this mission the group offers voluntary lifeguard services during weekends and public holidays, at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach from 08:00 to 17:00.<\/p>\n
Additionally the club have continued to expand their learn-to-swim programme across the Kouga region by visiting local schools and educating learners about the importance of water safety.<\/p>\n
Hammond said lifesaving-related sport promoted general well-being and a sense of competitiveness among all who enjoy both indoor and outdoor sports challenges.<\/p>\n
To continue the advancement of lifesaving in the province, the group will host the Lifesaving Eastern Cape Championships alongside the Kouga Municipality on February 25 and 26.<\/p>\n
Each day participants will compete in group events, including flags, beach sprints, long runs and relays for both land and water.<\/p>\n
Hammond said that all lifesaving club members from the age of 8 can take part in the competition.<\/p>\n
He indicated that there are specific criteria in place for each age category.<\/p>\n
\u201cPrepare to be blown away by the competitors who will showcase their strengths to all who attend the event, to see our provincial heroes from as young as 8-years-old facing off against the best our province has to offer,\u201d said Hammond.<\/p>\n
To expand their reach in Kouga they will also be recruiting new lifeguard trainees during the event.<\/p>\n
Hammond said the club welcomes any donation and sponsorship, in the form of tangible assets such as pool sessions, wetsuits, and swim equipment.<\/p>\n
