The Kouga Municipality is committed to ensure that Hankey residents have easy access to waterborne sanitation where they live, before the end of the year \u2013 providing basic services to communities.<\/p>\n
The commencement of Phase 3 of the ongoing multi-million-rand sanitation project will see the connection of 320 residential, commercial, and school properties.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt a cost of approximately R22.5 million, Phase 3 of the project will see the construction of two new sewage pump stations in Hankey and Centerton respectively,\u201d said former Kouga executive mayor, Horatio Hendricks.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Hankey sewage pump station will be built on a current \u201cgreenfield\u201d area on the northern bank of the Klein River, just north of the steel rail bridge crossing the same river, while the Centerton pump station will be constructed in a built-up residential area, next to a sports field and an existing stormwater retention pond.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe old inferior pump station in Centerton will be disconnected and will be taken out of operation, but it will not be destructed.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Hendricks, once completed, the sanitation project will provide waterborne sanitation to the town of Hankey and surrounding areas, including Hankey, Hankey Town, Old Hankey, and Phillipsville.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe upgraded sewer pump station will result in fewer sewage spills and provide for the additional sewage influx from the planned housing development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Phase 1 and 2<\/strong><\/p>\n Constructed at a total cost of R30.6 million, phases 1 and 2 of the project were completed between April 15, 2021 and December 13, 2022.<\/p>\n A total length of approximately 10 650m of new sewage pipes and 315 new sewer concrete manholes were installed during the first phase of the project. Phase 2 saw the construction of two new rising mains to the Hankey Waste Water Treatment Works.<\/p>\n \u201cNot only is sanitation core for the growth and development of communities,\u201d said
