The Kouga Municipality is set to replace the old and dilapidated main water pipeline system in Mimosa Street, Jeffreys Bay, at a cost of close to R18 million. <\/p>\n
The project is funded by the Water Services Infrastructure Grant. Not only will the project see the upgrading of critical infrastructure, but it will also greatly contribute towards the economic upliftment of residents.<\/p>\n
A contractor, Ibhabhathane Trading cc, has been appointed as the preferred service provider, and construction will commence shortly. It is estimated that the project will be completed within 12 months from the date of commencement.<\/p>\n
Scope of work<\/p>\n
The project will see the construction of a new 2 200m uPVC water main (315mm in diameter) from Mimosa Street to Noorsekloof Road, which will connect to existing water pipelines.<\/p>\n
The new pipeline will be laid within the left-hand edge of the roadway, and will involve the saw cutting and excavation of existing asphalt and layer works. Fire hydrants and a pressure reducing valve will, furthermore, be installed. <\/p>\n
Upon completion, Mimosa Street will be resealed and furnished with new road markings. Also on the project map is a 500m pipeline (160mm in diameter) that will be installed along Da Gama Road.<\/p>\n
Kouga executive mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said by implementing the project, water pipe bursts which happened frequently in Mimosa Street will be negated and water losses will be drastically reduced.<\/p>\n
Economic development<\/p>\n
\u201cPloughing back into the community and spearheading local economic development, some 20 percent of the contract value will be sub-contracted to local Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs),\u201d said Bornman. \u201cIt is my unwavering vision to continue to build Kouga as a municipality of opportunity for all, where anyone from any background can realise their potential and enjoy a high-quality standard of living.\u201d<\/p>\n
