With only a few weeks of school left, and the Christmas season fast approaching, many people are looking forward to enjoying time with their family and friends, centred on delicious meals. Sadly, many children in the Kouga region who are dependent on the National School Nutrition Programme will be without a meal while schools are closed.<\/p>\n

To combat this challenge, Jeffreys Bay-based non-profit company, One Village, is seeking the community\u2019s assistance to ensure that from December 1 to 31 as many children as possible will receive two meals a day at their soup kitchen\u2019s new location, opposite JBay Animal Rescue Sanctuary at 85 Ocean View Drive.<\/p>\n

Evelyn Markides, co-founder of One Village, said that to ensure that each child receives their much-needed two meals a day they are encouraging the community to purchase their R5 booklet, worth R310 each, which will enable the children to use two R5 tickets to purchase two meals a day, two treats, and two clothing items throughout the month of December.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt school the children receive one meal a day through the nutrition programme, but since the schools will be closing soon the nutrition programme falls away and they are left without any food,\u201d said Markides.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving two meals a day for 31 days will make a huge difference towards these children\u2019s daily nutrition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Markides said the R5 booklet initiative was initially established to get cash and drugs off the streets, and to encourage the parents and children to be responsible under the slogan \u201cDon\u2019t teach our children to beg\u201d. <\/p>\n

As part of the R5 booklet initiative, those who are interested in purchasing a booklet can do so at one of their many outlets, which can then be handed over to any person in need.<\/p>\n

The R5 booklet can then be used at One Village\u2019s soup kitchen.<\/p>\n

Markides said that their soup kitchen\u2019s new address opposite JBay Animal Rescue Sanctuary is a good location for both food recipients and food deliveries.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur new address is safer and is in walking distance from the nearby township,\u201d said Markides.<\/p>\n

To further expand their R5 booklet initiative to help more children in need, she said that they are looking forward to creating a good Christmas season for everyone.<\/p>\n

However, to ensure that the \u201c31 days of Christmas\u201d is a success, they need support from the community.<\/p>\n

In addition to purchasing a hard copy of the R5 booklet, she said that potential sponsors are welcome to contact her or visit their soup kitchen, where they can register their names on their registry and pay their desired amount via electronic banking.<\/p>\n

Markides further said that the sponsor should inform those in need to use their name when requesting a meal, which will be marked on their registry.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy purchasing meals through our registry, those who are in need of a meal only need to use your name to get a meal,\u201d said Markides.<\/p>\n
