On January 15, NSRI St Francis Bay and Kouga Municipality’s lifeguards were alerted to a surfer reportedly requiring medical assistance at Seal Point, Cape St Francis, but sadly after extensive Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), the man who is believed to be about 30 years old was declared dead.<\/p>\n
Sarah Smith, NSRI St Francis Bay station commander said that after receiving the alert at 14:54, the NSRI prepared to launch an NSRI rescue craft while NSRI medics, NSRI rescue swimmers, Kouga lifeguards, EC Government Health EMS, REMS (Rapid Emergency Medical Services), Relay ambulance services, local security and CCP (Community Crime Prevention) companies and the SA Police Services responded.<\/p>\n
She said that when the NSRI members arrived on the scene they found a doctor assisting Kouga lifeguards and public members to conduct CPR efforts on a man, believed to be 30 years old and is allegedly from Cape Town.<\/p>\n
\u201cNSRI medics and paramedics assisted with the CPR efforts on the scene. Despite extensive CPR efforts sadly, the man was declared deceased,\u201d said Smith.<\/p>\n
She further said that the body of the man has been taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.<\/p>\n
Smith said that police have opened an inquest docket.<\/p>\n
She said that the NSRI commends surfers, who they believe had noticed that the man was in peril in the water, while surfing, and they were able to rescue the man to the shoreline.<\/p>\n
Smith further said that the family of the deceased man was cared for on the scene by a trauma counsellor.<\/p>\n
“Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased man,” said Smith.<\/p>\n
