As part of the launch of the 2024 Matric Support Programme, matric learners at Qhayiyalethu FET in Kareedouw will receive accommodation for the remainder of the school year, to avert the impact caused by long-distance travelling.<\/p>\n
The 2024 Matric Support Programme is a result of a partnership between Tsitsikamma Wind Farm Trust (TWFT) and Cennergi, a renewable energy solutions company based in Gqeberha.<\/p>\n
The Tsitsikamma Wind Farm Trust has been involved in the development of the school by funding various intervention programmes, meant to improve academic performance.<\/p>\n
The school currently has 917 learners who have experienced various challenges, from overcrowding in classrooms, a shortage of teachers in critical subjects, leadership changes, and more.<\/p>\n
Qhayiyalethu principal, Landile Buwa, said that the school, similarly to other schools in Tsitsikamma, is faced with scholar transport challenges, which is not adequate for learners in need.<\/p>\n
He said that this results in several learners having to wake up very early to get to school, and then return home late in the afternoons, which ultimately has an adverse effect on their overall academic performance.<\/p>\n
To avert the impact caused by long-distance travelling, TWFT has funded the accommodation of 86 matric learners at Paul Sauer Hostel (a neighbouring school), from April to November 2024.<\/p>\n
This intervention includes three meals a day, extra teaching, and learning for the duration of the accommodation.<\/p>\n
The launch of this intervention was marked at an event hosted for Grade 11 and 12 learners at New Rest Community Hall.<\/p>\n
The event was attended by various school key stakeholders, the School Governing Body, school management team, District Department of Education and Cennergi.<\/p>\n
On the day, Cennergi and TWFT also donated sanitary products to 126 girls, golf t-shirts, and school bags.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith this event, we are hoping to motivate the 2024 matric class into believing their ability to achieve a 100 percent pass rate, irrespective of the past years\u2019 performances, which painted a bleak picture,\u201d said Sindiswa Speelman, community development manager. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe that with the right mindset, the school leadership, governing body, and learners, anything is possible.\u201d <\/p>\n
Zilindile Thambo, Humansdorp circuit manager, expressed his gratitude to the partnership with Cennergi and the Wind Farm. <\/p>\n
In his address, Thambo also shared exciting news that Landile Buwa, who has been the acting principal since last year, has officially been appointed the school principal.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the Wind Farm, we cannot over-express our excitement to learn of this appointment. This is because we have seen the adverse effects of not having a permanent leader or principal within a school.
