Noticing an increase in abuse and neglect towards the senior citizens in Humansdorp, the Nation Builders Prophetic Apostolic Movement (NBPAM), a service centre for the elderly, invited the South African Police Services to educate them about gender-based violence, abuse, and their rights.<\/p>\n
Founder of NBPAM, Pastor Ashwell Goliath, said that they have noticed that the elderly in Humansdorp are often abused and neglected.<\/p>\n
As a result, they offer regular counselling sessions and do home visits to assist the elderly who are left to take care of their grandchildren for long periods while their parents are away.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe abuse and neglect of the elderly are a big concern, and it is getting worse. We therefore need more resources to help the elderly,\u201d said Goliath.<\/p>\n
To educate the elderly about gender-based violence and various forms of abuse and neglect, and to inform them about their rights, he said that they had invited the local SAPS to speak to the elderly as part of their monthly special programme at the Humansdorp Library on April 18.<\/p>\n
During the event, Goliath said that they also received much-needed walking frames from an anonymous donor.<\/p>\n
As they continue to grow in numbers, he said they are in desperate need of a permanent facility to host their weekly programmes for the elderly and donations of nutritious meals.<\/p>\n
Goliath said that they also need office equipment, tables, chairs, and stationery.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe currently use the club fees to buy food and most of the time my wife and I must add our own money towards the various projects. This is an assignment that was given to us by God, but we do need funding to assist us,\u201d said Goliath.<\/p>\n
In addition, he said that they also need transportation to transport the elderly to and from the library each week.<\/p>\n
To raise the funds needed for the organisation, Goliath said that they will be hosting their first fundraising event for the year on May 24, when they will be selling braai packs which include meat, chicken, wors, two salads, and rooster brood for R100.<\/p>\n
The braai packs can be ordered by contacting Goliath.<\/p>\n
He said that they are also looking forward to their first weekend away tour to Port Alfred in September.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe accommodation is already booked. We are now raising funds to pay for the other services and meals that will be needed,\u201d said Goliath.<\/p>\n
