THE National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is reaching out to the community after two disturbing acts of vandalism recently targeted their shark bite kits in Jeffreys Bay.<\/p>\n
NSRI communications manager, Andrew Ingram, said that one kit was vandalised and the first aid equipment stolen, leaving the protective box irreparably damaged.<\/p>\n
Further, he said that another kit was damaged during what appears to be an attempted theft, although it seems the perpetrators abandoned the robbery and the box needed to be repaired.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese shark bite kits are more than just first aid supplies, they are essential life-saving tools,\u201d said Ingram.<\/p>\n
\u201cDesigned to provide immediate medical assistance in shark bite incidents, the kits have compression devices to stop bleeding effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ingram said the kit\u2019s effectiveness has been demonstrated several times in recent years, showcasing its vital role in the NSRI\u2019s beach safety measures.<\/p>\n
\u201cHaving these kits readily available at some strategic beaches gives first responders immediate access to critical life-saving equipment, ensuring swift action in emergencies,\u201d said Ingram.<\/p>\n
He further said that the NSRI must, unfortunately, replace the stolen equipment and repair the damaged box, which costs R5 000.<\/p>\n
Ingram said that support from the community can significantly impact maintaining beach safety, and saving lives.<\/p>\n
