On June 28, the Hawk’s Serious Commercial Crime
\nInvestigation ensured that the Gqeberha Specialised Commercial Crime Court
\nconvicted and sentenced Florika Shenay Owusu (29) and Abongile Tyusha (28) for
\ncharges of fraud and money laundering at a bank in Humansdorp.<\/p>\n
According to Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe
\nMhlakuvana, from November 14, 2019, to June 30, 2021, Owusu and Tyusha were
\nemployed as bank consultants at an Absa branch based in Humansdorp.<\/p>\n
He said among their duties were to issue clients with bank
\ncards and assist them with bank inquiries.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe information exposed that both accused fraudulently
\nopened bank accounts to transfer cash from various clients\u2019 dormant bank
\naccounts into their fraudulent account,\u201d said Mhlakuvana.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he said the accused reportedly withdrew cash
\nwhich was fraudulently transferred to various areas in Hankey and surroundings.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThe transactions were made in tranches and as a result, Absa
\nsuffered a loss of over R1 million,\u201d said Mhlakuvana.<\/p>\n
He said further information divulged that the bank conducted
\nits internal audit and picked up discrepancies and the matter was reported to
\nthe Hawks for further probe. <\/p>\n
Mhlakuvana said the investigations by the Hawks led to the
\narrest of both accused on July 27, 2022, and they made their first court
\nappearance the following day on July 28.<\/p>\n
He further said they were both released on R1 000 bail each.\n<\/p>\n
Mhlakuvana said they made several court appearances until
\ntheir sentencing by the Gqeberha Specialised Commercial Crime Court on June 28.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThe duo was sentenced to undergo six years direct
\nimprisonment with no option of a fine,\u201d said Mhlakuvana.<\/p>\n
The Acting Provincial Head Brigadier Fernando Luis gave a
\nthumbs up to the investigating team for making sure that the accused eventually
