The 2024 Trans Baviaans which will take place on August
\n10, from Willowmore to Jeffreys Bay, marks the 20th<\/sup> edition of the
\ncountry\u2019s favourite single-stage marathon mountain bike event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the last two decades the Baviaanskloof has presented
\nchallenges as varied as the magnificent nature reserve itself; from sweltering
\nheat to icy cold, torrential flooding to arid droughts. <\/p>\n

This year\u2019s traverses
\nof the largest wilderness area in South Africa will once again present unique
\nchallenges with 63 river crossings and measures put in place to mitigate the
\nfurther spread of a Foot-And-Mouth Disease outbreak which has affected the
\nEastern Cape cattle and sheep farmers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It will still reward too, as the infamous R332 road has
\nbeen graded all the way to Rooihoek, well within the rugged reserve. This, a
\npredicted tail wind in the first 140 kilometres, and a strong elite field
\nshould all contribute to an attempt on the course record.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first of two events, starts at 10:00 in Willowmore on
\nAugust 10, and concludes after 227 kilometres of racing and 2\u00a0850 metres
\nof climbing at Mentors Country Estate in Jeffreys Bay.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Zane Schmahl, of the Trans Baviaans said, \u201cWe\u2019re
\nexpecting a fast edition.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe recently graded road makes it possible to not just
\ncomplete the course on a gravel bike, as a few riders have done in the past,
\nbut to race a gravel bike too.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rossouw Bekker, of Valley Electrical Titan Racing said
\nwhile laughing, \u201cWe have gone back and forth on which bikes to race. It\u2019ll be my first Trans Baviaans so I\u2019m really excited.”<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an iconic event and one I have somehow never done.
\nWe will be pushing the limits of our Titan Racing Switch gravel bikes tyre
\nclearance and have fitted 2.1 inch mountain bike tyres, with tubeless inserts.
\nI think gravel bikes will be significantly faster leading into the Reserve and
\nthen across the closing kilometres to Jeffreys Bay too, so we\u2019ll just have to
\nbe cautious when it gets rough.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bekker will be partnered by Matthys Beukes in a
\nformidable team, which on paper has the firepower to challenge the existing
\ncourse record of seven hours, 51 minutes and six seconds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a strong line-up and our target is to avoid
\nriding in the dark,\u201d Bekker alluded, avoiding any outright confirmation of
\nrecord chasing goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Arno du Toit and his Insect Science teammate, Keagan
\nBontekoning, are Bekker and Beukes\u2019 most formidable rivals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2018 Du Toit dipped below the eight-hour mark himself,
\nfinishing before sunset alongside Gert Heyns. <\/p>\n

\u201cLet’s be honest, we’re not really conditioned to race
\nfor over or close to eight hours,\u201d Du Toit allowed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s a bit different than the stuff we normally prepare
\nand train for. I really feel Trans Baviaans is one of the most iconic events in
\nour country and always have it on the calendar, so I\u2019m super happy that it fits
\nin with our racing schedule this year. It\u2019s also a beautiful part of South
\nAfrica and awesome to explore it on a bicycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI like the different challenges it brings. Not only in
\nterms of a long day out, but from equipment choice to planning nutrition,
\neffort management and other strategies while staying motivated mentally.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think it would be really cool to race on a gravel
\nbike, but Keagan was too soft, so not this year unfortunately,\u201d Du Toit joked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there are some rough sections in the kloof which
\nwon’t be efficient at all and will take too much effort to get through. We’re
\njust running fast tyres, Schwalbe Thunder Burts on the Giant Anthems. I think
\nthat will be the fastest choice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Route update and a new finish venue<\/strong><\/p>\n

Du Toit and Heyns lost the lead and the chance at a
\ncourse record, in 2018, by taking a wrong turn after Check Point 7.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is a tough lesson which should serve to remind every
\nteam taking part in the Trans Baviaans that the route is unmarked. \u201cTrans
\nBaviaans operates on an adventure racing ethos,\u201d Schmahl noted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery rider is encouraged to download the GPX files and
\nto familiarise themselves with the route, which has changed slightly this year.
\nWe are going back to a start in the centre of Willowmore, alongside the town
\nhall, and have moved the finish line to the Mentors Country Estate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 63 water crossings have been meticulously graded by the
\nevent organisers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are 24 crossings which are simply a wet trickle
\nover the road, 12 which will create a splash as you ride through, 19 where you
\nwill get your feet wet, and seven which will require you to get off and push
\nyour bike. One, the Langwater after the Smitskraal Check Point 123 kilometres
\nin, is a swim hazard if you get it horribly wrong. So, exercise caution,\u201d
\nSchmahl advised.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also need riders to comply with the Foot-And-Mouth
\nDisease mitigation measures we have put in place, in order to help the local
\nfarmers who do so much for the event.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Check Point 7, after 205 kilometres at Zuurbron,
\nevery bicycle\u2019s wheels will be sprayed with disinfectant and thereafter you
\nwill cycle through disinfectant baths at several farm gates. Please remove your
\nbottles from your bike for the spray process and when riding through the baths.
\nThis process is to prevent the spread of the viral disease between affected and
\nnon-affected herds of cows, pigs, sheep, and goats.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Weather conditions are looking positive for the Trans
\nBaviaans Race. Fresh, yet not overly cold, conditions are predicted for
\nWillowmore on Saturday morning, along with a nine metres per second breeze from
\nthe Northwest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The breeze is expected to rise to 10 metres per second in
\nthe Baviaanskloof while the temperature should also increase to a maximum of 20
\ndegrees Celsius.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At least 1.2 millimetres of rain is predicted for
\nJefferys Bay on Saturday evening, along with a gentle five metres per second Southwest
\nheadwind.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Temperatures on the coast should also be warmer than
\ninland with a low of 14 expected overnight and into the early hours of Sunday
\nmorning.\u00a0<\/p>\n
