HUMANSDORP<\/strong> – A Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) cyclist is embarking on an ambitious 2,000km journey through the Eastern Cape and along the Garden Route to raise funds and awareness for animal welfare organisations, with SPCA Assisi in Humansdorp among the beneficiaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anrico Quiens began his “Pedal for a Purpose” campaign on 8 June, setting off from SPCA Grahamstown on a route that will take him along the N2 before returning to his starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fundraising initiative supports three SPCAs: Grahamstown, Assisi in Humansdorp, and the Garden Route SPCA, with all funds raised going towards the care and protection of vulnerable animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a dedicated cyclist and animal lover, Quiens said the idea grew from his desire to give back and help others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It all came from my passion for helping others, as I’ve been helped when I was down in life. I have been planning this for a couple of months now,” said Quiens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For local supporters, the inclusion of SPCA Assisi was particularly significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiens said he felt strongly that the organisation should be part of the initiative after learning more about its work in the Kouga region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that after speaking to Louise Bakkes of SPCA Assisi, he felt it was important to include the organisation in his fundraising initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“SPCA Assisi is doing a sterling job with animals in the area,” said Quiens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that his decision to support the SPCA movement was rooted in a shared love for animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiens said that the journey presents a major physical and mental challenge, requiring extensive preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have prepared intensely, both physically and mentally, for a ride this long. The mental training is the most important,” said Quiens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As I always say, you can be the fittest person alive, but if your mindset is not focused on the goal, the battle is lost. The mental preparation is of utmost importance.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiens said that he is travelling the route on a road bike, following the N2 throughout the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While no specific fundraising target has been set, he said that he hopes to raise as much as possible for the participating SPCAs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiens said that community members and businesses have already started supporting the initiative through donations and sponsorships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that businesses and individuals can also sponsor advertising space on his cycling shirts through sublimated printing at a once-off fee of R800.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiens is appealing for support along the route in the form of accommodation and sustenance, as well as donations to the participating organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting on what completing the journey would mean to him, he said reaching the finish line would represent more than a personal achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I always pride myself on finishing what I start, and for me it would be a great achievement, especially if I reach my goal of helping the SPCA,” said Quiens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is not every day that a young person chooses to dedicate a 2,000 km solo cycling journey to support animal welfare, and his commitment speaks volumes about his compassion, determination, and selflessness,” said Bakkes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She further said that for organisations like SPCA Assisi, community support is the lifeblood that enables them to continue caring for vulnerable animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bakkes said that Quiens’ efforts not only help raise much-needed funds, but also create awareness about the challenges faced by SPCAs across the country and the important work that is done daily to protect and care for animals in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What makes Anrico’s journey particularly special is that he is using his passion for cycling to make a tangible difference in the lives of countless animals,” said Bakkes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that Quiens’ slogan, “One Ride, One Cause, Countless Lives Impacted,” perfectly captures the spirit of this extraordinary undertaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are honoured to be one of the societies on his route and look forward to welcoming him to Assisi. We encourage our community to get behind Anrico, support his cause, and help make his dream a meaningful reality for animal welfare,” said Bakkes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
