KOUGA <\/strong>– The Kouga Local Municipality\u2019s Economic Development (ED) Section has given local entrepreneur Laurentia \u201cAunty Lau\u201d George\u2019s culinary dream new wheels \u2013 literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The much-loved owner of Aunty Lau’s Lekker Fast Food Takeaway, Laurentia George’s, received a fully equipped mobile food trailer from the Kouga Local Municipality’s Economic Development (ED) Section, marking a major milestone in her journey from small-town cook to celebrated community caterer. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The much-loved owner of Aunty Lau\u2019s Lekker Fast Food Takeaway received a fully equipped mobile food trailer from the municipality, marking a major milestone in her journey from small-town cook to celebrated community caterer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vibrant trailer \u2013 fitted with built-in gas grillers and fryers, a stainless-steel sink, display fridge, water boiler and sleek serving counter \u2013 will allow George to take her famous seaside flavours on the road, serving customers at festivals, beachfronts, and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is bigger than I ever imagined,\u201d said an emotional George. \u201cThis food truck is more than just wheels \u2013 it is a dream in motion. It\u2019s a chance to share our local flavours with more people and to create opportunities for others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George\u2019s journey is one of perseverance and purpose. What began in 2020 as a way to support her family during the COVID-19 pandemic soon blossomed into a thriving business. Her signature seafood dishes \u2013 especially her famously tender calamari \u2013 have made her a household name in St Francis Bay. Last year, she was crowned the \u201cCalamari Queen of St Francis Bay\u201d at the St Francis Calamari Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the handover ceremony, George was recognised for her dedication and entrepreneurial spirit. The occasion also showcased the successful collaboration between the municipality\u2019s departments and key partners, including the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) and Halalisana Township Incubator, whose joint efforts made the initiative possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The support provided to George reflects the municipality\u2019s ongoing commitment to empowering local entrepreneurs and strengthening small businesses through tangible assistance and capacity-building programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her new food trailer marks a significant milestone in her business journey, symbolising growth, sustainability, and the positive impact of partnerships in driving local economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ECDC Regional Manager Vuyokazi Zozi and Halalisana CEO Angela Hendriks both praised George\u2019s determination and the power of partnerships in driving entrepreneurship. \u201cShe is resilient and hardworking,\u201d said Hendriks. \u201cThis food trailer is a pathway to generational wealth. I don\u2019t think people realise how big this moment is for her \u2013 she has been patient and persistent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another boost, George\u2019s application for assistance under the ECDC Small Town, Township and Rural Entrepreneurship Programme (STTREP) has been approved. The funding will allow her to purchase additional equipment and receive ongoing training and mentorship over the next 12 months \u2013 building on the foundation laid through the municipality\u2019s capacity-building programmes in food safety, compliance and record keeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing proudly beside her husband – her greatest supporter \u2013 George expressed heartfelt gratitude to the municipality and its partners. \u201cThere were times I didn\u2019t believe in myself, but you encouraged me to keep going. It was all worth it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To fellow SMMEs, she shared a message of encouragement: \u201cKeep working hard. Stay committed, and you will reap the rewards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
