According to police statements, Nel told investigators that his mother was bedridden and in severe pain, and that he wanted to end her suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nel, who is unmarried with no children, returned to Gqeberha to care for his ailing mother after working various jobs in the Western Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the incident, Nel\u2019s only previous criminal record dates back to 2003, when he received a R2000 fine for drug possession after voluntarily surrendering to police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nel\u2019s brother, Hendrick Nel, provided an affidavit in support of the bail application. As one of only two children of the late Ria Nel, Hendrick described his brother as \u201ca good person who would not harm anyone\u201d and emphasised how Christo had cared for their mother right up until her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe mom experienced unbearable pain towards the end of her life,\u201d Hendrick stated in his affidavit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As previously reported by the Express, according to a media statement by SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the suspect presented himself at the Kabega Park police station on Saturday morning, 23 August 2025, at approximately 09:30, where he confessed to shooting his elderly mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police report noted that Nel expressed suicidal intentions following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bail-conditions\"><a>Bail Conditions<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nel\u2019s R5000 bail comes with several conditions that were listed by the magistrate during the court proceedings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Must report to the police station every Monday and Friday<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 House arrest between 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM at his designated Lorraine address<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Cannot change his fixed address without notifying authorities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Prohibited from entering the Sherwood Retirement Village<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Must surrender all travel documents<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 No firearms permitted &#8211; any weapons must be handed over to police<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Must appear for all scheduled court dates<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case has been postponed to November 20, 2025, for further investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GQEBERHA&nbsp;&#8211; Christo Nel (64) accused of murdering his elderly mother has been granted bail of R5000 after telling police he shot her to end her unbearable suffering.
