HUMANSDORP <\/strong>– It has been over two weeks since Akhumzi Masoka (17) from Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape and a learner at Grey High School in Gqeberha boarded a flight to the United Kingdom for his three-month rugby exchange programme at Hurstpierpoint College, where he is thriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As previously reported, Akhumzi will spend over three months at the renowned UK institution as part of an initiative aimed at fostering international sporting and academic connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to his mother, Thembakazi, he’s adjusting remarkably well to his new environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He’s been adjusting well, and he has made a lot of friends. Everyone is very welcoming and offers to help him out whenever he needs something,” said Thembakazi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that he has enjoyed spending time with his new friends and exploring the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He shared with me that he recently walked around the malls and the city with some of his new friends. They bought clothes and also took pictures in one of the photo booths close to Brighton Beach,” said Thembakazi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the excitement ahead of his flight on 23 August, she said that it was bittersweet to say goodbye to her son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exchange programme, now in its second year, will see Akhumzi staying at Hurstpierpoint College’s boarding house from 24 August to 7 December, under the pastoral care of Fred Pierrepont, Hurstpierpoint’s Head of Rugby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was very painful. I had mixed emotions and even shed tears because he’ll be away for a long time. Three months is long for a mom who sees her son once or twice a month,” said Thembakazi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m also happy this is a big break for Akhumzi. We are so proud of him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey to make Akhumzi’s exchange programme a reality became a testament to the power of community support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the significant costs threatened to derail the opportunity, the response from neighbours, friends, and even strangers left his mother deeply moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was deeply moved to see neighbours, friends, and even people I don’t personally know come together for my son. It was overwhelming. It shows me that this dream belongs not just to him, but to the whole community,” said Thembakazi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the many acts of generosity, one gesture stood out particularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nosthembiso Williams sponsored a cow for the fundraising efforts and then bought it back herself, donating R10,000 to Akhumzi’s cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It meant a lot because no one could have done what she (Nosthembiso Williams) did for us,” said Thembakazi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She further said that while two companies also made donations, the majority of support came from individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The rest was taken care of by Maggie and Stuart Graham, not forgetting to mention Betty Anoster, Xolani Woni, Wever Madlwabinga, and Reginald and Lisa Solani. They have played a big role. We’ll forever be grateful,” said Thembakazi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The most surprising moment during the fundraising process was the willingness of people to donate. They showed so much support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have invested in my son’s future, and I will never forget your generosity. Each of you has played a part in making this opportunity possible, and I am so grateful.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a mother watching her son embrace this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Thembakazi has clear hopes for what Akhumzi will gain from the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I hope he grows not only as a rugby player, but also as a young man. I want him to experience a new culture, learn independence, and gain confidence. Most importantly, I hope he comes back with lessons he can share with others, both on and off the field,” said Thembakazi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that this journey represents more than just a rugby exchange; it’s proof that dreams can become reality with the right support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This journey is just the beginning for Akhumzi. I believe he will use this opportunity wisely and make the community proud. I also hope his story encourages other families to keep nurturing their children’s talents because with the right support, dreams can come true,” said Thembakazi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
