{"id":267209,"date":"2025-09-01T09:02:56","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T07:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/kougaexpress\/putin-defends-ukraine-war-at-summit-blames-west-for-conflict\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T09:44:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T07:44:47","slug":"putin-defends-ukraine-war-at-summit-blames-west-for-conflict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/kougaexpress\/putin-defends-ukraine-war-at-summit-blames-west-for-conflict\/","title":{"rendered":"Putin defends Ukraine war at summit, blames West for conflict"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tianjin,\u00a0China. \u2013 Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday defended his war in Ukraine before Moscow\u2019s allies, blaming the West for sparking the three-and-a-half-year conflict that has killed tens of thousands and ravaged much of eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis crisis was not triggered by Russia\u2019s attack on Ukraine, but by a coup in Ukraine that was supported and provoked by the West,\u201d Putin said at a summit of the <a href=\"https:\/\/eng.sectsco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shanghai Cooperation Organisation <\/a>(SCO) in Tianjin, China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was referring to Ukraine\u2019s 2013\u20132014 pro-European revolution, which ousted a pro-Russian president. In response, Moscow annexed Crimea and backed separatists in the east, plunging the country into war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe second reason for the crisis is the West\u2019s constant attempts to drag Ukraine into NATO,\u201d Putin added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SCO summit brought together Russian allies, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. (Photo by Genya SAVILOV \/ AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-calls-for-a-new-global-system-beyond-the-west\">Calls for a \u2018new global system\u2019 beyond the West<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Putin argued that the world needs \u201ca system that would replace outdated Eurocentric and Euro-Atlantic models, and take into account the interests of the widest circle of countries.\u201d He praised China, India, and other partners for their efforts to advance peace proposals on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, however, diplomacy has faltered. Despite US President Donald Trump urging Moscow and Kyiv to reach an agreement, talks have stalled. Putin has rejected a ceasefire and demanded Ukraine cede more territory and abandon Western backing as conditions for peace \u2013 demands Kyiv dismisses outright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putin said he would continue discussing diplomatic options, including his latest talks with Trump, during a series of bilateral meetings.
