RESIDENTS of Somerset East have been experiencing water problems for a very long time. It has become so bad that sometimes certain parts of town have no water for up to a day and because of this situation certain schools have been forced to close early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fortunately, the contingency plan promised by Nigel Delo, acting manager of the Blue Crane Route Municipality earlier this year, has been set in motion to address the chronic problems. The first step was to implement water restrictions effective from March 7, until further notice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Mandisi Planga, newly appointed acting municipal manager of the BRCM, these restrictions would stay in place as a cautionary measure despite the fact that the water levels look promising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, as promised, Aurecon and Bosch Munitech have taken the responsibility of assisting the BCRM with the water problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Andr\u00e9 Swanepoel, of ADS International in Somerset East, has been appointed as subcontractor for Aurecon and Bosch Munitech. Workers from the BCRM have been trained to work on the project and they are installing water meters in Somerset East, Pearston and Cookhouse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A pipeline is being installed between the Hub near Bestershoek and the Kalela reservoirs and according to Swanepoel, \u201cWe are working diligently to ensure that the project is finished by mid-June.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Paul Bauman from ASD International, the problem of a blocked pipe line from Lake Bertie to the Orange Fish water treatment works Somerset East were being attended to but they were still trying to find where the blockage was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the meantime, ASD is supplying standpipes and taps to be installed in Somerset East, Cookhouse and Pearston which will also be installed by trained workers from the BCRM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A burst pipe in Worcester Street has also been fixed. While it was being fixed a certain part of town was left without water for two days. Despite the inconvenience, residents were glad that the problem had been seen to so promptly and to hear that the promised water project was being handled quickly and efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
