A woman masquerading as a medical doctor and her alleged assistant have been arrested for practicing without a licence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A joint operation involving Komani Crime Intelligence, DPCI,
\nK9, VIS and the South African Health Products Authority netted two suspects, aged between 33 and 40 on
\nThursday, January 21 in Molteno, Chris Hani District.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi
\nKinana, the operation followed after information was received from Crime
\nIntelligence in September last year that one of the suspects was practicing
\nwithout a licence and operating as a medical doctor in Molteno. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe reports further alleged that the suspect was not
\nregistered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa, but
\nnonetheless was dispensing medication to patients,\u201d said Kinana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cReports suggest that the bogus doctor started practicing in
\n2018.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kinana added in order to verify the authenticity of these
\nallegations, the investigators contacted the Health Professional Council of
\nSouth Africa which provided an affidavit in support of the allegations against
\nthe bogus doctor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSubsequently, an operation dubbed \u2018Operation Corona\u2019 was
\nconducted by the integration of role-players which included the South African
\nHealth Products Regulatory Authority Unit,\u201d said Kinana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cConsequently, the two suspects were found doing business in
\ntheir surgery and were immediately arrested by the police. One of the two
\nsuspects, the assistant, is believed to be a boyfriend of the bogus doctor.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kinana said on the second day after the surveillance of the
\nsurgery the previous day, an intensive search was conducted in the surgery and
\nthe house of the bogus doctor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMedication estimated at R700 000 and used and unused needles
\nfor injection were confiscated,\u201d said Kinana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thembisile
\nPatekile, hailed the success of the operation and further expressed concern
\nabout the unending degree of fraud and corruption in the society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs management of the SAPS in the Province, we are on record
\nas having warned people against fraudulent activities on many occasions. Those
\nwho are adamant and believe these are only idle threats, must suffer the
\nconsequences of their actions,\u201d said Patekile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two suspects will be
\ncharged for fraud and contravention of the Medicine Act No 101\/1965 and are
\nexpected to appear in the Queenstown Magistrate\u2019s Court today, January 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
