THE two bulk sewer lines crossing at the Mlungisi Cemetery are blocked regularly as a result of foreign material deposited into manholes upstream by communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was a response from Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) after a sewer spillage was spotted at the local cemetery on Thursday, August 19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
CHDM spokesperson, Buli Ganyaza, said the blockages had prompted the municipality to constantly monitor and unblock whenever sporadic spills emerged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said the district authority had had to block the same line three days prior to the August 19 blockade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA team was immediately dispatched to go and unblock and apply hypochlorite to kill any pathogens that could harm the environment and contain any stench,\u201d Ganyaza said. Relocating the lines, Ganyaza said, was not ideal, as this was a slopy area necessary to propel the sewage movement downslope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEven with this particular case, sheep skin was found blocking the pipeline and this has caused sewer spillages in the site, something which could be avoided. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe urge our community to avoid such occurrences as these have a serious impact on the quality of service we provide,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
