The newly elected Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) leadership seems to have hit the ground running as it prepares to embark on road construction and rehabilitation projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The local authority has appointed Makali Plant and Construction for construction work at the troublesome Fikile Gwadana Drive in Ezibeleni. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Municipal spokesperson, Lonwabo Kowa, said the construction company was introduced to the Ezibeleni community by technical services political head, Councillor Mhlangabezi Mangcotywa, recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFikile Gwadana Drive is set to receive a major upgrade, starting from the railway crossing and ending at Ikhala TVET College. The 6.9km stretch of road will be reconstructed, using asphalt and paving blocks. The duration of the project is estimated to be 12 months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fikile Gwadana Drive was resurfaced at a cost of R3 million and handed back to the municipality in March last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The current project will cost the municipality R98 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kowa said another project was the Whittlesea rehabilitation of roads and stormwater drains. The project is part of the small towns revitalisation programme which is funded by the Office of the Premier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kowa said EMLM expected the project to take three years. Local SMMEs and community members are expected to get business and jobs. \u201cPhase 1A will take eight months and will entail construction of earth lined stormwater drains in Sada and Extension 4. There will also be stormwater pipe culverts installed in Ekuphumleni,\u201d Kowa said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Whittlesea, he said, there would be the construction of the main internal streets with associated stormwater drains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
