Three convicts who escaped from the Whittlesea Correctional
\nServices Centre in August 2020, were sentenced by the Whittlesea Magistrate\u2019s
\nCourt for armed robbery with aggravating circumstances and escape from lawful
\ncustody. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eastern Cape Hawks provincial spokesperson, Warrant Officer
\nNdiphiwe Mhlakuvana, said the trio were sentenced on March 7. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the day of the escape, Khanyiso Dlali (26), Lundi Mzimkhulu
\n(36) and Sibusiso Nzuzo (40) one of the inmates managed to disarm a prison
\nguard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOn August 14, 2020, the trio escaped from Whittlesea
\nCorrectional Services where they were incarcerated. During the incident, the
\nprison warders were busy closing the prison doors straight after the inmates
\nwere coming from the exercises. After that, wardens heard someone knocking at
\nthe door and they quickly opened where they noticed the scuffles between
\ninmates and wardens as a result one of the inmates forcefully disarmed the
\nwarden his service pistol,\u201d Mhlakuvana said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, he said, the wardens were pointed with a firearm
\nand ordered to hand over the cell keys, their cell phones as well as their
\nuniform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The inmates reportedly locked the wardens inside the toilet and
\nescaped. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A manhunt was launched on the same day resulting in their
\nre-arrest three months later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The arrests were affected by an integrated operation of the Queenstown
\nbased Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks and Tactical
\nResponse Team, he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nzuzo had been arrested for murder, Dlali for rape and Mzimkhulu
\nfor a cash-in-transit heist robbery prior their escape from Whittlesea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They remained in custody for the duration of their trial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDlali was found guilty on one count of escaping from lawful
\ncustody and was sentenced to five years imprisonment. Mzimkhulu and Nzuzo on
\ncount one of robbery with aggravated circumstances were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment
\neach and on count two escaping from lawful custody sentenced to eight years
\nimprisonment each. The implication is that the duo will each serve a period of
\n15 years each behind bars as both counts will run concurrently,\u201d Mhlakuvana
\nsaid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Obed Ngwenya,
\napplauded the investigating team for their determination in making sure the
\nre-arrest of the trio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
