THIS week, we continue our journey of educating readers about useful home remedies – explaining why they work, as well as how. I will talk mostly about home remedies that are useful for disorders that affect the digestive system.

Ginger for nausea

Nausea is a queasy sensation which is normally accompanied by an urge to vomit. Ginger has been used for hundreds of years for its medicinal properties, including helping to calm tummy troubles. Recent studies have highlighted the effectiveness of ginger in alleviating nausea due to morning sickness during pregnancy, motion sickness or chemotherapy.

It is said to work by obstructing the serotonin receptors in the gut that cause nausea. It also may prompt the body to release enzymes that help break down food, and therefore reduce the urge to vomit. So when you feel nauseous, it would help to chew ginger root or drink ginger tea.

Witch hazel for haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus that cause discomfort and bleeding. They are often referred to as piles by a lot of people. Witch hazel is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and is helpful to cool the burn of haemorrhoids.

The plant itself is high in tannins and these help calm blood vessels and reduce swelling. So go on, change your diet, as well as apply witch hazel. It is worth noting that these remedies are useful when there are no underlying causes, so should you experience these symptoms for longer periods, do see your healthcare provider. This is done to avoid further damage and to avoid the worsening of the symptoms.
