Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden returns with its Winter Wonders programme from Saturday 27 June to Monday 20 July. Families can look forward to a mix of creative and outdoor activities during the school holidays.
Free entry for children
Children aged 17 and under enter the garden free of charge throughout the programme. Families without advance bookings can collect a free ticket at the Kirstenbosch ticket office on arrival.
“Winter Wonders is about creating meaningful, memorable moments in nature, especially for families during the winter school holidays,” says Sarah Struys, Events and Tourism Manager at Kirstenbosch. “With free entry for children and activities that combine creativity, culture and environmental learning,” she adds, “we continue to make Kirstenbosch a space where families connect with nature.”
Something for every child, every day
The Happy by Nature area runs daily and offers hands-on activities for younger visitors. Children can join pot-a-plant sessions. They plant their own indigenous plants to take home. Rock painting tables and a cosy nature corner with a chalkboard wall and building blocks add to the fun. A self-guided scavenger hunt through the nursery, completed with a parent, rounds out the daily programme.
Rhythm, art and guided walks at Moyo
From Tuesdays to Fridays, visitors can join marimba and drumming sessions or try sand art. Guided garden walks at Moyo restaurant are also on offer.
The walks suit children aged six to 12. They run on Tuesdays 30 June and 7 and 14 July from 12:00 to 13:00. Each walk ends with a complimentary hot chocolate at Moyo. Groups meet at the restaurant.
On Tuesday 14 July, Felicity Ellmore from the Cape Bird Club leads a guided bird walk. It suits all ages.
For the adults
Visitors can explore the garden’s scenic walking paths or find a quiet picnic spot. Moyo, Fynkos and Vida e Caffè are all open for meals. The Kirstenbosch Bookshop and Gift Shop are offering discounts throughout the school holidays.
