An investigation is underway after nine Koeberg High School learners allegedly consumed muffins containing dagga and required medical attention.

The incident happened on Thursday 3 September, after several learners reportedly became “unusually drowsy” and displayed symptoms that raised concern at the Maitland-based school.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said it is investigating the circumstances surrounding incident.

Millicent Merton, spokesperson for the WCED, said: “The matter came to the school’s attention after several learners appeared unusually drowsy and displayed symptoms that warranted further assessment,” Merton said.

Merton said the school scheduled a meeting with the parents and guardians of the affected learners.

“All the learners received medical attention and were able to return home with their parents and guardians on the same day.”

Merton confirmed that appropriate “further action” will be determined based on the information gathered.
