Message from the Chairperson:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dear Chamber Members and Business
\nFriends,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Hermanus Business Chamber
\nnotes with deep disappointment the planned protest action, as it will impact
\nnegatively on trade for our members who are already under strain with current
\nload shedding schedules and the negative economic impact of previous demonstrations. 
\nWe do however welcome the notice period and, undertaking for a peaceful
\nand lawful demonstration. Where possible we encourage members to grant
\nemployees leave should they wish to participate. Unfortunately the \u201cno work no
\npay principle\u201d  will apply to those workers who participate in the planned
\ndemonstrations without the required approved leave.   <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has been an unusual year with
\nextreme economic challenges to all. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a national level we had changes
\nin political leadership, multiple increases in the fuel price, a recent
\nincrease in bank lending rates and various service protests all over the
\ncountry. In the Overstrand we had our own social unrest which, without any doubt
\nhas affected every single resident in our area. How exactly each of us was
\nimpacted will be the focus of many studies, arguments and introspections in the
\nyears to come. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With all of these \u201creality checks\u201d
\nit is easy to forget about some of the success stories. These have put the
\nOverstrand in general and specifically Hermanus in the spotlight for the right
\nreasons. Herewith a few of our success stories which would not have happened,
\nif it were not for the active and supporting roles of some of our members:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7        
\nAnother Cape Epic Cycling tour in our area;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7        
\nThe Walker Bay extreme was very successful and brought visitors to
\nHermanus who made the best of the extra long weekend;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7        
\nThe Fyn Arts festival had its usual positive energy;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7        
\nPatrons of The Kalfiefees also brought a positive injection, especially
\ninto the restaurants;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7        
\nThe Whale Festival, in its 26th<\/sup> year, has become synonymous
\nwith our town and, \u201cour whales\u2019 did not disappoint, with one of the best whale
\nwatching seasons recorded in many years ; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7        
\nThe Second Annual Global Golf Challenge brought some of the best
\ninternational lady golfers into town and, without any doubt, this event has
\ngrown significantly in stature and success from the last tournament<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7        
\nThe beginning of the Hermanus Varsity Trust which will attempt to
\nfacilitate access and support for tertiary education in Hermanus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have experienced an active year
\nwith many networking marketing opportunities for our members at various venues.
\nProbably one of our proudest moments must have been the Chamber\u2019s close
\nco-operation with the Western Cape Government and Overstrand Tourism in
\nfacilitating Service Excellence Training Courses to uplift the level of Service
\ndelivery in our area. A consequent competition with informed adjudication led
\nto several of our members receiving cash prizes and certificates.
\nCongratulations once again to all the winners, including the overall winner
\nGilbert Muchanyare from Gilbert\u2019s Catering, and one of our Committee members
\nMichael Bayer from \u2018Hermanus has Heart\u2019, who was a finalist. We are very proud
\nof the recognition that these members received and look forward to a new focus
\non this initiative in 2019. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have also had our fair share of
\nmembers who moved on and out of Hermanus although we are very thankful for a
\nlist of new members who joined us in the past year. A special word of welcome
\nto each of the following new members:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nRossouw Modern Art,  Figure Diggers , Agrimark,  CSM , Dick van der
\nZee , The Art Shop , Curro Hermanus , Dr Adri Louw , Wrap , El Al , ABSA
\nHermanus and the Hermanus Art Galleries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chamber is a registered NPO and
\ncannot continue to offer these services unless our members pay their membership
\nfees, and we gain more new members. We appeal to all businesses in the
\nOverstrand to help us make your voice stronger, giving you representation at
\nhigh level with relevant authorities and government. It can only benefit you.

The Chamber is not immune to change and the need for
\nongoing introspection is vital. As a matter of urgency, to ensure that we
\nremain relevant to the increasing need for support to our members, early in the
\nnew-year, we will need to embark on a comprehensive revision of our purpose,
\nobjectives and strategies. We are encouraged by the overwhelming support
\nreceived from members for a mandate to reach out to stakeholders who endorse
\nconstructive dialogue, law and order and preservation of jobs. The further exploration
\nof exactly what this implies and what it might require is an exciting journey
\nas it can only take us forward. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are working to avoid any negative impact on any
\nbusiness in the Overstrand and specifically our members. However, this journey
\nmight take us through some unknown territory and will require courage and
\npatience with each other. We have seen instances this year where some of our
\nmembers have lost-out on business opportunities due to increased competition,
\nwhich is part of doing business and, that is acceptable. However; what we as a
\nChamber can no longer endure, is where jobs are either lost or not created due
\nto policy uncertainty and\/or inconsistent enforcement of by-laws, regulations
\nand legislation. These instances in 2018 did not take us forward and should be
\navoided at all costs in 2019. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We want to wish you all a positive festive season and
\nmay we continue with more credibility and steadfastness in the new-year.
