One man was
\ncritically injured and several others sustained less serious injuries in an
\naccident on the R43 between Hermanus and Stanford last Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities
\nconfirmed that the R43 between Stanford and Hermanus was closed after the
\naccident involving only one vehicle on Thursday 3 September shortly before
\n08:00. The road was closed to traffic for nearly two hours while emergency
\nrescue service staff attended to the injured and recovered the wreck of the
\nvehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clinton
\nCoetzee, owner of Autorepairs Towing, said: \u201cThere were tyre marks on the road
\nsurface and it appears that the vehicle had a tyre burst. The vehicle hit the
\nbarrier and flew through the air before landing in a ditch at the side of the
\nroad,\u201d Coetzee explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Passengers
\nwho were seated in the back of the vehicle were flung out, with some landing in
\nthe stream at the side of the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe
\nfirefighters and paramedics had to carry the patients on stretchers up the
\nmuddy embankment. One patient was critically injured,\u201d said Coetzee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
EMR and CMC
\nPrivate Ambulance Services as well as Western Cape Health Department EMS
\nambulances transported a total of 13 patients to hospital. The helicopter also
\nlanded at the scene to airlift on of the patients to hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Warrant
\nofficer Freddie Booysen, spokesperson for Stanford Police, says it is suspected
\nthat the driver lost control of the vehicle after one of the tyres burst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
