Hermanus Child and Family Services says the baby found in the
\nsewerage system should act as a wake-up call, urging people to reach out to
\nthose experiencing difficulties. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are living in perilous times,\u201d said David Duncan, HCFS
\nchairman. \u201cLife can become too difficult, especially when there is no one to
\nturn to. People often turn a blind eye to someone in trouble \u2014 especially when
\nthat person has done something wrong in society\u2019s eyes. Prostitution also often
\nleads to the challenge of unwanted babies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of judging the person, he said, one should place oneself
\nin the other person\u2019s shoes. \u201cHave we ever placed ourselves in the shoes of
\nsomeone who is pregnant and has no place to sleep, nothing to eat and no-one to
\nturn to without being rejected?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duncan pointed out there are a number of institutions in the
\nOverstrand offering help to those who feel they are unable to care for their
\nunborn baby. This includes Hermanus Child and Family Services in Malva Street,
\nMount Pleasant (028\u2009313\u20090830) and Badisa (028\u2009312\u20093909). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every welfare office has a social worker who knows what the
\nprocedures are to arrange for adoption. Pregnant women can also approach their
\nlocal clinics for advice and assistance. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The first step in the adoption process is to contact a
\nsocial worker or adoption agency. This implies the mother will sign off her
\nparental rights towards the child. She will need the biological father\u2019s
\nconsent. If the father is unknown an advertisement must be put in a national
\nnewspaper for three months to trace the father\u2019s whereabouts. If there is no
\nreply the child can be registered as an adoptable child. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duncan confirmed there is no \u201cdrop-in centre\u201d for unwanted babies
\nin Hermanus, and no known safe place for pregnant mothers to stay while they
\nare pregnant. The closest facility where women can leave their babies at a safe
\nplace to be put up for adoption is Helderberg Baby Saver in Somerset West.

Lana O\u2019Neill of Heavenly Promise in Bredasdorp says most of the
\ncases of child abandonment occur outside office hours. \u201cIt\u2019s not ideal, but the
\nmother can also wrap the baby up warmly and leave the child on the doorstep of
\nsomeone they trust who can then contact the police and social services,\u201d she
