The National Sea Rescue Institute were kept busy over the
\nEaster weekend with three incidents along the Hangklip-Kleinmond coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NSRI Kleinmond duty crew were activated at 07:18 on
\nFriday 2 April following reports of a drowning in progress at Rooi Els. Tania
\nMeiring, NSRI Kleinmond duty coxswain, says eyewitnesses reported that two
\nmales with a floatation device were seen struggling in the water for over 45
\nminutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhile responding to the scene it was confirmed that a
\nprivate boat with three local men on board had launched to go to the assistance
\nof the two casualties. The crew on the private boat had taken the NSRI pink
\nrescue buoy from the Rooi Els slipway with them,\u201d said Meiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
William Boltmann (36) who has a holiday house in Rooi Els,
\nhis brother Richard (32) and their friend Francois Koekemoer (46) were
\nreportedly preparing to go crayfishing on their five metre rigid hull
\ninflatable boat (RHIB) when they were informed by an NSRI coast watcher of two
\nmales from Kuils River, aged 27 and 19, who had been swept off rocks while
\ncrayfishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Strong winds hampered their efforts to throw the rescue buoy
\nto the men in difficulty. \u201cWilliam then jumped into the water armed with the
\npink rescue buoy. He got the buoy to one of the casualties and the crew on the
\nboat pulled him to the boat and he was rescued,\u201d said Meiring. \u201cWilliam then
\nswam the rescue buoy to the second casualty, and he was also pulled onto the
\nboat and rescued.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The men were taken to the slipway where GB Med Sec
\nparamedics treated them for non-fatal drowning symptoms and hypothermia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe NSRI commends the swift action of William Boltmann, his
\nbrother Richard, and their friend Francois Koekemoer, who contributed to saving
\nthe lives of the two casualties,\u201d said Meiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later that day the NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew were activated
\nat 14:35 to assist four men from Wellington on a kreefbakkie (small open
\nfishing boat) who reportedly suffered engine failure offshore of Rooi Els. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alan Meiklejohn, NSRI Gordons Bay station commander, reports
\nthat the vessel\u2019s anchor hadn\u2019t reached the seabed as the water was too deep,
\ncausing them to drift. Meiklejohn says, while the sea rescue craft Spirit of
\nSurfski was on its way to the scene, they were informed that the men had
\nmanaged to start the small craft\u2019s motor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NSRI continued and met up with them offshore of Kogel
\nBaai where their engine had failed again. \u201cWe towed the small fishing boat with
\nthe dad, his two sons and a male friend to Harbour Island where their boat was
\nrecovered and they required no further assistance,\u201d said Meiklejohn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NSRI Gordons Bay duty were activated early the next
\nmorning after a coast watcher reported witnessing a capsized boat drifting
\noffshore of Maas Baai, Hangklip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNSRI Kleinmond duty crew were also activated and the
\nEMS\/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter was placed on alert, said Meiklejohn. \u201cOur sea
\nrescue craft Spirit of Surfski was prepared to be launched and NSRI Kleinmond
\nlaunched their NSRI jet rib, and their sea rescue craft Jaytee III.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAn off-duty NSRI Gordons Bay crewman who was fishing in the
\narea on a sea kayak paddled out to the capsized boat and he was able to find a
\nboat name and registration number for the boat on the boat\u2019s fire
\nextinguisher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This information was relayed to the South African Maritime Safety
\nAuthority (SAMSA) who were able to establish a contact number for the owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On contacting the owner, he confirmed that he and a crewman
\nwere able to get safely ashore after they had capsized the Friday at 18:00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They had alerted the Police to the capsizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NSRI Kleinmond towed the casualty craft to shore where it
