Kort na die feestyd het Kleinmond letterlik die brandpunt vir brandweerwaens en brandbestrydingshelikopters geraak nadat \u2019n veldbrand die afgelope Saterdagoggend uitgebreek het by die departement van bosbou, visserye en die omgewing (DEFF) se eiendom oorkant die gesogte Arabella-landgoed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Di\u00e9 veldbrand, wat in \u2019n dig beboste gebied uitgebreek het, het groot rookwolke veroorsaak en vinnig was die hele Overberg bekommerd oor hul veiligheid \u2013 veral met die 2019-brande in Bettysbaai waar lewens en eiendom verwoes is nog vars in almal se geheue. Dag een<\/b><\/b>\n<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aanvanklik het die brand, wat in die vroe\u00eb oggendure ontstaan het, na Perdeberg versprei, weg van die Highlandspad af. Met toestande wat vinnig op 8 Januarie verander het en die wind wat al hoe harder begin waai het, het Cape Nature se grondspanne op die linkerflank van die brand gefokus terwyl Working on Fire se spanne die regterkantste flank bestry het. Alle stappers is aangeraai om die gebied te vermy. <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Overstrand-munisipaliteit en die Overberg-distrikskmunisipaliteit se spanne het ook alles in hul vermo\u00eb gedoen om die brand in bedwang te probeer kry. <\/p>\n

Teen die einde van dag een het die ICP (voorval-bevelpos) na Kleinmond se verkeersdepartement geskuif. Die brand was nou duidelik sigbaar in die Hottentots-Holland-bergreeks bo Kleinmond aan die westekant van die dorp. Dag twee<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Tydens dag twee van die brand het die brandlyn nader aan Heuningklip afgeskuif. Dit het ook nog ho\u00ebr op in die berge nader aan Arabella-landgoed gebrand. Op dag twee is die brandbestrydingshelikopters ook ingebring om die brand in bedwang te help kry. Die brandbestryders se prioriteitslys vir dag twee het ingesluit die veiligheid van die omliggende gemeenskappe asook al die brandbestryders. Daar is ook pogings aangewend om die brandlyne bo Kleinmond en Lamloch-plaas in bedwang te kry. Die doel was om die lyn so gou as moontlik te onderdruk met die meerderheid van brandbestryders en helikopters op die brandlyn bo die R44. Teen 14:00 op 9 Januarie is die brand gedeeltelik onderdruk (50%) en tot dusver het ongeveer 2 400 hektaar gebrand. Teen 17:00 is daar \u2019n spitsuur aangekondig omdat die wind erg begin optel het en helikopters het brande aan albei kante van die berg gaan bestry. Teen 19:00 word alle helikopters gegrond omdat die weer te gevaarlik is om in te vlieg. Die R44 word teen 21:00 vir alle verkeer gesluit omdat daar te veel rookwolke is. Teen middernag het die brandlyn nader aan Arabella (sowat 3km van Arabella af) versprei. Dit het egter veroorsaak dat inwoners paniekerig geraak het en die omgewing wil verlaat. <\/p>\n

Dr. Annelie Rabie, die burgemeester van die Overstrand-munisipaliteit, het \u2019n beroep op die inwoners gemaak om nie die gebied te ontruim nie. \u201cDie brandweerhoof sal ons kontak indien dit nodig is om te ontruim. Moenie vals inligting deel wat nie deur die munisipaliteit bevestig is nie.\u201dDag drie<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

\u2019n Tydelike stop en ry is op die R44 daargestel, met net een baan wat vir verkeer oopgestel is. Op dag drie is die brand nog nie in bedwang gebring nie. Lester Smith, die Overstrand-munisipaliteit se brandweerhoof s\u00ea helikopters is ingebring om te help om strukture in Heuningkloof te beskerm. Daar was op dag drie 100 brandbestryders aktief besig om die brande te bestry.Ontstaan van die Kleinmond-brand<\/b><\/p>\n

Smith het bevestig dat die ontstaan van die brand nog nie vasgestel kan word nie. \u2019n Anonieme bron het wel aan Hermanus Times<\/i> genoem dat die brand ontstaan het nadat \u2019n groep onwettige houtkappers Vrydag 7 Januarie omstreeks 22:00 \u2019n vuur naby die plantasie by die Highlandspad begin het om warm te bly. \u201cBrande begin nie sommer vanself nie. Die onwettige houtkappers se vuur het toe buite beheer geraak en die ontstaan van die brand veroorsaak,\u201d s\u00ea die anonieme bron. Skade<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Louise Wessels, die mediabeampte van Highlands\/Kleinmond Wildfire, onder leiding van die burgemeester het op 10 Januarie vasgestel dat 3 700 hektaar al in puin gel\u00ea is. <\/p>\n

Tydens dag twee van die brand het Gys Boonzaaier, \u2019n plaaslike byeboer, 11 van sy byekorwe in die brand verloor. Die groot skade is egter die voedselbron wat hy verloor het vir 170 korwe. \u201cEk moet nou nuwe weiveld vir die bye soek. Grondeienaars wat oor weiding beskik, kan my op 083 225 5695 asseblief bel,\u201d s\u00ea Boonzaaier. Die skade het nie daar gestop nie en later die aand het \u2019n struktuur binne die Lamloch-plaas ook afgebrand. Gemeenskap raak betrokke<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Die gemeenskap het almal hul ondersteuning gewys en daar is alles van ys tot water en oogdruppels vir die brandbestryders afgelaai. <\/p>\n

Rabie het Wian Smith, \u2019n 10-jarige seun van Sandbaai bedank. \u201cHy het 100 worsrolletjies gemaak en vir sy pa en die Tafelronde gevra om die worsrolletjies saam hom in Kleinmond te kom aflaai,\u201d s\u00ea Rabie. Hoe kan jy betrokke raak?<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Die Overstrand-munisipaliteit het aangedui dat ys, water, oogdruppels en sonblok benodig word. Ys kan by die wetstoepassers se kantoor afgelaai word. Die stadsaal se kombuis word 11:00 oopgemaak om as afsetpunt vir alles te dien. Die munisipaliteit het ook gevra dat inwoners asseblief die agterste parkering gebruik vir aflewerings om die hoofstraat oop te hou voor die polisiekantoor en die laerskool in Kleinmond. Geen mense word toegelaat op die laerskoolgronde nie omdat dit dien as landingsplek vir die helikopters.<\/p><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b>\n\n\n\n
