Vroeg op \u2019n Maandagoggend stap die bekende Suid-Afrikaanse akteur Ian Roberts rustig straat-op, op soek na die koffiewinkel waar hy gere\u00ebl het om met Hermanus Times<\/span><\/i>te gesels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hy is lank en lenig, dra sy kenmer\u00adkende hoed en met sy potblou o\u00eb en rasperstem is hy onmiskenbaar. Die meeste mense onthou hom as Sloet Steenkamp uit die gewilde televisiereeks Arende<\/i>, of ken hom as musikant van die Radio Kalahari-orkes. Van die ouer garde sal hom onthou as Boet van die motorolie-advertensies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roberts praat gemaklik oor \u2019n wye verskeidenheid onderwerpe en skroom nie om sy mening te lug nie. By tye voel dit asof sy blou o\u00eb tot in jou siel kyk, maar na daai rasperstem kan \u2019n mens heeldag luister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n Wat bring jou na Caledon van alle plekke?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Radio Kalahari-orkes se violis, Wynand Davel, het hier grootgeword en sy ma woon hier. Wanneer ons kleiner shows <\/i>hier rond doen wat jou nie huisves nie, bly ons by haar oor. Dis baie gerieflik, want dis sentraal gele\u00eb vir shows <\/i>in Botrivier, Greyton en Hermanus.Jy kom van \u2019n baie Engelse agtergrond en het op jou ouers se plaas in Fort Beaufort in die Oos-Kaap grootgeword, Engelse skole bygewoon en aan Rhodes Universiteit studeer, maar praat ook vlot Afrikaans en Xhosa. RKO se musiek is Afrikaans. Waarom?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Op die een vlak is dit toeval, op \u2019n ander vlak is dit \u2019n eienaardigheid. Ek het van vroeg in my lewe \u2019n emosionele verbintenis met die Afrikaner. My familie is Walliesers, nie Engelse nie. Ek was vir \u2019n ruk in Engeland en het glad nie tuis gevoel nie. Ek was \u2019n vreemdeling en het gevoel ek hoort nie daar nie. Ek kon nie vinnig genoeg uit die land kom nie. Die emosionele ding het begin toe ek Arende<\/i> moes studeer vir die rol van Sloet Steenkamp. Hulle het vir my boeke van die Oorlogsmuseum in Bloemfontein gestuur en ek is aanges\u00ea om dit te lees sodat ek kon verstaan wat met daardie gevangenes gebeur het. Ek het gesien watter soort orde die Britte wou afstempel op plekke wat hulle ingeval het, en dit is vir my walglik. Ek het ook mense soos De La Rey se lewe bestudeer en in \u2019n mindere mate di\u00e9 van De Wet en Smuts.Wie skryf jul musiek?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My neef Dan Roberts, die skrywer Rian Malan, wat ook soms saam optree, en ek.Hoe het die pandemie julle be\u00efnvloed?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ons het eintlik nooit ophou speel nie. RKO bestaan uit ses lede, maar soms het net twee van ons die pad gevat en vir \u2019n handjievol mense gespeel.Wat was jou gunstelingrol wat jy gespeel het?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit is \u2019n baie moeilike vraag, want wat met \u2019n mens gebeur is dat jou ego verander soos jy aangaan. Wanneer jy jonk is, is jy vol ego en dan is die ego-rolle die beste. Maar namate jy groei, word jy meer soort van ego-loos en dan verander die rolle. Ek sal tog s\u00ea die rol wat die grootste impak op my gehad het, was di\u00e9 van Sloet Steenkamp in Arende<\/i>. En voor dit Verspeelde Lente<\/i>. Ook die reeks Heroes <\/i>was baie goed, maar niemand het eintlik daarna gekyk nie, want dit was in Engels. Daardie rolle was vir my baie spesiaal. Dan was daar ook die rolprent Everyman\u2019s Taxi <\/i>waar ek die uitdaging gehad het om die regie te doen, die teks te skryf en daarin te speel.Jy het onlangs weer pa geword van \u2019n tweeling. Hoe ervaar jy dit?<\/b><\/b>\n<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit is \u2019n heeltemal ander storie as wanneer jy jonk is en kinders kry. Alles wat met jou gebeur, be\u00efnvloed jou waarde as \u2019n ouer. Ek is nou \u2019n klein bietjie beter toegerus om meer by die kinders betrokke te wees. Dit was moeilik met die eerste twee omdat ek en my gewese vrou, Michelle Botes, baie gewerk het en ook in die kollig was. Die tweeling is kort voor die pandemie gebore en dit was \u2019n baie moeilike tyd. N\u00e1 \u2019n jaar het ek gevoel ek weet nie meer wie ek is nie. Ek was so verlore in hierdie intensiewe tyd waardeur ons is.Waar kom jou belangstelling in kruie vandaan?<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Ek het maar oor die jare met kruie begin werk. Maria Treben se Sweden Bitters was my inspirasie, maar ek het my eie dinge uitgewerk en maak my eie tee-mengsel wat ek daagliks drink. Ek maak ook \u2019n kruie-olie wat ek slangolie noem.Hoe lyk die pad vorentoe?<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Ek weet nie. Ek is \u2019n man wat baie dinge doen; nie net musiek nie. Ek speel in rolprente, skryf tekste en is ook rolprentvervaardiger. Ek probeer nou al vir vier jaar om finansiering te kry vir \u2019n rolprent. Ek het sewe jaar aan die teks geskryf, herskryf en weer geskryf. Dit kan moontlik so teen die begin van die winter \u2019n werklikheid word. Vir my sal d\u00edt die eerste prys wees.<\/p><\/b><\/b>\n\n\n\n
