Di\u00e9 vierjarige seuntjie moes in die eerste twee jaar van sy lewe daagliks hulpeloos toekyk hoe sy pa sy 39-jarige ma rondruk, slaan en verbaal mishandel. Hy self dra ook fisieke littekens van een so \u2019n aanval toe sy pa hom een aand tydens \u2019n struweling gegryp en seergemaak het. \u201cHy het sy humeur verloor omdat my baba gehuil het toe hy my slaan. Hy het die baba gegryp en sy kop teen die muur gekap. Hy het geskree ek is \u2019n heks en dat hy my seun van my sal wegvat,\u201d vertel Anele se ma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nadat haar seun uit die hospitaal ontslaan is, het Thandi (skuilnaam) \u2019n klag by die polisie aanhangig gemaak en by die hof vir \u2019n beskermingsbevel aansoek gedoen. Dit, s\u00ea sy, het nie veel gehelp nie. Haar lewensmaat het \u2019n paar weke agter tralies deurgebring \u201cmaar is vrygelaat omdat dit die begin van die Covid-19-pandemie was en die tronke was klaar oorval\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Elke keer dat sy die aanrandings by die polisie aangemeld het, s\u00ea Thandi, moes sy dit ontgeld. \u201cSy suster wat \u2019n polisievrou is, het altyd ges\u00ea ek moet hom vergewe, want hy is die hoof van die huis. Ek het later n\u00earens gehad om heen te gaan nie, want as ek gevlug het, het hy die huis waar ek was se vensters kom stukkend gooi. Dit het gelyk asof ek die moeilikheidmaker was. Hy het \u2019n goeie werk gehad en het \u2019n mooi kar gery. Hy was altyd nice met ander mense, hy was \u2019n wolf in skaapklere.\u201d Sy is ook emosioneel afgetakel tot die punt dat sy alle selfvertroue en hoop op \u2019n beter toekoms verloor het. Haar lewe was hel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs hy dronk was, het hy my geslaan. Hy het elke keer vergifnis gevra en omdat ek sag is en nie grudges hou nie, het ek hom elke keer vergewe. Hy het my blameer en ges\u00ea ek het hom provoke, hy het dit blameer op bose geeste wat veroorsaak dat ons baklei. Maar hy was die duiwel self. Om in sy gesig te kyk terwyl hy jou slegs\u00ea en slaan \u2026\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sy bly \u2019n rukkie stil en vertel dan verder \u201c \u2026jy sien sy gesig en sy o\u00eb verander tot jy hom nie meer herken nie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Een dag, nadat hy haar met \u2019n mes gesteek het, het Thandi besluit om haarself te verdedig. \u201cEk het die mes gevat en hom ook gesteek,\u201d vertel sy. Die ironie van die saak, s\u00ea Thandi, is die feit dat sy ses maande gevangenisstraf moes uitdien hoewel sy haarself net wou verdedig na jare van mishandeling aan sy hande. Na haar vrylating het die wrede siklus van mishandeling en opmaak voortgegaan. Sy moes eers die dood in die gesig staar voordat sy besluit het om van haar geweldadige lewensmaat te ontsnap en \u2019n nuwe lewe vir haar en haar seun te skep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHy het my gewurg totdat ek myself natgemaak en my bewussyn verloor het. Die bure het kom kyk wat fout is, want hulle het die bakleiery gehoor en toe raak dit net stil. As dit nie vir hulle was nie, het hy my doodgemaak. Toe ek in die hospitaal wakker word, het ek besef ek moet van hom af weggaan voordat ek ses voet onder die grond opeindig. Ek het besluit genoeg is genoeg.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sy het gevlug na \u2019n Bolandse dorp waar sy by familie gebly en werk gekry het. Toe sy hoor dat \u2019n vreemde man haar gesoek het, het Thandi weer haar karige besittings gepak en met haar seun op die vlug geslaan. Sy glo God het haar beskerm toe sy geryloop het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDie man het gevra waarheen ek wou gaan. Ek het vir hom ges\u00ea enige plek waar ek veilig sal wees,\u201d vertel Thandi. Die weldoener het haar in Hermanus afgelaai en Thandi het by die plaaslike polisie om hulp aangeklop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHulle het ges\u00ea hulle kan my nie help met \u2019n plek vir my en my kind om te bly nie. Daar was net \u2019n plek van veiligheid vir my seun, maar ek wou nie van hom af geskei wees nie. Ek het buite in die re\u00ebn met my kind gesit. Ek het gebid en vir die Here ges\u00ea Hy het belowe dat Hy my nooit in die steek sal laat nie, nou is die tyd om my te red,\u201d vertel Thandi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Asof haar gebede verhoor is, het Lana O\u2019Neill, stigter van die NPO Heavenly Promise wat werk met weerlose en mishandelde vroue en kinders, tot haar redding gekom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNadat ek vir haar vertel het wat fout is, het sy by die polisiekantoor ingegaan en die w\u00eareld vir hulle warm gemaak,\u201d vertel Thandi. \u201cLana is \u2019n warrior en \u2019n held. Sy het my gered en na \u2019n plek van veiligheid geneem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201dBy die plek van veiligheid het die pad na heling vir Thandi en haar seun begin. Sy gebruik nou haar verhaal van pyn en beproewing om ander vroue uit dieselfde situasie te help. \u201cI have turned my tests into testimony!\u201d beklemtoon sy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs ek nie ontsnap het nie, sou ek en my kind dood gewees het. Die enigste een wat jou kan red, is jyself. Daardie man sal nooit verander nie. Praat met iemand oor jou situasie voordat dit te laat is en jy ses voet onder die grond l\u00ea. Doen dit vir jou kinders en geliefdes se onthalwe. Iemand sal tot jou redding kom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
