The Women Action Group in
\nHermanus have used Youth Day celebrations and the long weekend as an
\nopportunity to raise awareness of violence against women and children in the
\nOverstrand and mobilise all communities to stand firm against gender-based
\nviolence (GBV) and sexual harassment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe all need to look at
\nourselves and say Enough is Enough,\u201d said the Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rabie, together with the Deputy Mayor, Lindile Ntsabo, members of Hermanus Police and Overstrand
\nAssociation for Persons with Disabilities (OAPD) joined the community as they
\nwalked from the Zwelihle Taxi rank to the Zwelihle Sport Station, where they
\nwere met by Overberg District Municipality\u2019s Deputy Mayor Archie Klaas for a
\ncommunity dialogue on the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Overstrand\u2019s fire fighters,
\ntraffic services, law enforcement officers, Task Team and K9-unit as well as
\nDisaster Management also joined the march to show their support. The programme included singing,
\ndancing, testimonies by survivors of abuse and speakers to educate as many
\npeople as possible and get them involved in programmes to fight GBV. The individual lighting of
\ncandles to celebrate survivors of gender-based violence and to think about
\nthose who have lost their lives and the abuse they received, was very touching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayor Rabie asked residents to
\naccept one another and to show tolerance irrespective of who you are. \u201cTo just say enough is enough,
\nis not enough. Let\u2019s start at home\u201d. She strongly advised parents who have
\nchildren who prefer to have relationship with the same sex, to accept them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She committed herself to
\nsetting up a meeting with the Magistrate\u2019s Court and other role players to
\ndiscuss how to give victims the maximum protection from domestic abuse: \u201cWe do
\nnot want rapist in our communities: they must go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mayor encouraged residents
\nand all organisasions involved to come up with a plan of how the Municipality
\ncan help communities to create safe spaces, especially safe houses. She thanked the Women Action
\nGroup for all the help and guidance they give and for helping to build an
