The sounds of children\u2019s laughter, cheers and shouting were heard when students of Lukhanyo Primary in Zwelihle took part in a special Fun Day last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event at the local sports field was organised by the school and two occupational-therapy students from Stellenbosch University who are in their final year and completing their practical work at the school. Approximately 248 students took part in the activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The goal of the event, said Yonela Sokomani, one of the students, was to promote gross motor engagement as key to academic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The day started off with an educational talk presented by an Overstrand traffic official who taught the children about road safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The day proceeded with sporting activities such as soccer ball dribbling, sack racing, \u201ccrab walking, and a wheelbarrow race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inge Kuchar, one of the OT students, said: \u201cAlthough a big goal of the day was achieved by the learners having fun, some important building blocks of child development were addressed. Coordination, teamwork, concentration, gross motor skills, social interaction and visual-motor abilities are a few of the many areas of development that were stimulated and promoted through engagement in these sporting activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The learners each received a lucky packet and juice at the end of the event. The class with the most spirit and best cooperation also received a prize, while all Grade 2 learners received two stationery items to show appreciation for their participation in the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
