Willie Loedolff, the 94- year-old walker\/runner from Onrus passed away on 20 August after suffering a massive stroke. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fellow Whalers Athletic Club member and neighbour Leo Benning remembers Willie fondly, saying he often spoke of his health and painful knees, often indicating to both Leo and his wife Marie in the last few months that he did not know how much longer he was going to live. Willie was always a concerned citizen and during his 12-year stay in Northcliff, Hermanus helped to organise the hacking groups to get rid of alien vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Willie eventually moved to a house at Negester retirement complex about three years ago and continued with his gardening and particularly the cultivation of roses. During the last few years at the end of grape season, he took it upon himself to give bags of grapes that he had bought at the NG Church in the village to residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Willie wrote letters to the Hermanus Times<\/i> and especially to Die Burger <\/i>about contentious issues such as climate change and over-population in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Willie took over the running of his home after his wife Dirkie was diagnosed with dementia. He lovingly tended to her needs and became rather adept at making meals. He was often seen walking to the Onrus OK to buy provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Willie\u2019s active lifestyle only started in 1983 when he turned 55. He started walking in order to improve his fitness level to be able to participate in competitive events. In 2006 at age 79, he moved to Hermanus and was welcomed by the Whalers Athletic Club.Track running<\/b>: He competed on the track in over 40 masters athletics meetings at provincial and SA level and still holds six SA records. Cross country<\/b>: He competed for the old Northern Transvaal for many years and was awarded his Gauteng colours. \n When parkruns started in 2016 he immediately got involved and participated regularly. The Hemel-and-Aarde course is difficult and dangerous in parts and he fell on numerous occasions but recovered and continued. In November 2019 he had completed 200 prakruns and from age 91 he acted as the tail walker on about 102 occasions, 76 times in the 90-94 group which is the third highest in the world. In total he did about 50 more<\/span>. Ultra running<\/b>: In the Comrades marathon of about 90 km in 1988, and an up run, at age 61 his time was 7:39:54. This is his fastest time but he completed it 13 times. Really amazing! Many years ago when visiting his family in New Zealand Willie took part in two mountain runs of 67 km. The 67 km Kepler Challenge is comparable to the Comrades marathon, but tougher and one 100 km race.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
