At the time, Overstrand Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie met with Mayco members and senior staff to discuss the issue of safety in public areas. She confirmed the municipality had increased law enforcement\u2019s presence along Rotary Drive and would do the same in Fernkloof (\u201cFernkloof is dangerous\u201d, Hermanus Times, 5 October 2022<\/span><\/i>). Rotary Way is also a hot spot for criminal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Overstrand Municipality (OM) referred the Hermanus Times<\/i>\u2019 enquiry regarding last week\u2019s incident to the police. The municipality later released a media statement reporting 18 tourism safety monitors had been appointed to patrol the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These monitors will work in shifts, seven days a week between 07:00 and 19:00. The municipality stated a minimum of eight monitors would be on duty at any given time to patrol various \u201chot-spot\u201d areas at Fernkloof. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSafety within the Fernkloof Nature Reserve has become a concern, following recent incidents,\u201d said OM Municipal Manager Dean O\u2019Neill in the statement. \u201cThe municipality has already increased its law enforcement presence at Rotary Drive and Three Dams with mobile safety kiosks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn addition to patrols, the tourism safety monitors will also provide general information and will be able to accompany hikers in the nature reserve on a complimentary basis during weekdays and weekends if requested.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hikers can report to the visitor centre at Fernkloof, where the guides are based. Alternatively, send an email to tourism@overstrand.gov.za to book a guide. Fernkloof is open from 06:00 to 19:00 during the summer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overstrand Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie reiterated the importance of knowing one\u2019s surroundings and sticking to safer areas when hiking alone or in small groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFernkloof Reserve stretches over 1 800 ha and is not enclosed,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are \u00b1 20 access points, which make entry easy, but difficult to control with 60 km of interlinked trails. Please always remember that hiking should be approached with caution, respect and common sense.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The safety monitors can be identified by their yellow bibs, an identification card and a blue cap with the municipal logo on.Safety tips:<\/b>.<\/span> Programme emergency numbers into your cellphone before your hike \u2013 028 312 2400 in case of a fire, flood or medical emergency, 028 313 8980 for security and safety and disaster management issues and 028 313 8996 for day to day law enforcement complaints;.<\/span> Don\u2019t hike alone;.<\/span> Inform someone of your route and what time you\u2019re expected back;.<\/span> Wear a hat or cap and sun block in summer and take something warm. Weather changes rapidly and unexpectedly;.<\/span> Stick to well-used contour paths;.<\/span> Always take enough water, especially in summer, and food in case of a delay;.<\/span> Take a fully-charged cellphone;.<\/span> A walking stick makes for an easier hike.
