{"id":48827,"date":"2023-03-29T06:00:17","date_gmt":"2023-03-29T04:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/hermanustimes\/controlled-burn-in-bettys-bay-20230327-2\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T04:26:00","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T02:26:00","slug":"controlled-burn-in-bettys-bay-20230327-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/hermanustimes\/controlled-burn-in-bettys-bay-20230327-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Controlled burn in Betty\u2019s Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With memories of the sweeping fires that hit Betty\u2019s Bay in January 2019 still vivid, residents\u2019 shackles still tend to go up whenever they see or even smell smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why the Overstrand Municipality wishes to warn residents in advance about the controlled burn taking place in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A controlled burn on 80 ha of the Blessberg in Betty\u2019s Bay is planned for the first week the month, weather permitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis burn will be both a fuel-load reduction and an ecological burn,\u201d Municipal Manager Dean O\u2019Neill pointed out, and it will be first of the controlled burns of the 2023 burn season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overstrand Municipality along with Cape Nature, the Overberg District Municipality and Greater Overberg Fire Protection Association (goFPA) will conduct the burn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey will also do search-and-rescue operations in the days leading up to the burn to remove tortoises, chameleons and other animals out of harm\u2019s way,\u201d O\u2019Neill said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The municipality requests that members of the public please avoid the area during the burn. A map for the planned prescribed block burns can be viewed on the municipal website under mapping and then click on the link.
