Heavy rains caused flooding as well as mud and rock slides in some areas, leading to roads being closed while mop-up crews removed the debris from road surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The R44 (Clarence Drive) was closed for a few days after minor rock falls and mud slides along the route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Motorists travelling from Hermanus to Cape Town had to be re-routed for more than a day when the off-ramp from the R43 onto the N2 at Botrivier was closed due to sand and other debris that washed up onto the road surface. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the Cape Agulhas region the road between Bredasdorp and Arniston was also closed to traffic due to the road surface being flooded. All roads have since been re-opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Overstrand Municipality reports that a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) was set up, and the responsible services and disaster management teams were activated on Tuesday 20 May after receiving a number of calls for assistance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O\u2019Neill confirmed that homes were flooded and several roads closed as a safety precautionary measure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hangklip area seemed to be the hardest hit with large volumes of water flowing from the mountains causing flooding especially in Betty\u2019s Bay and Pringle Bay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This, said O\u2019Neill, caused damage to the gravel road surfaces. In the Lakeside area in Betty\u2019s Bay a portion of the road washed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to O\u2019Neill the Provincial Disaster Management team visited the Overstrand to assess the damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
