Sy talent ken geen perke nie. Ons het hom leer ken as Bart in 7 de Laan<\/i>, toe sprei hy sy vlerke en gaan na Amerika om die Hollywood-droom te leef en herontdek weer sy musiektalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As jy na sy reis in die vermaaklikheidsw\u00eareld kyk, besef \u2019n mens vinnig alles waaraan Niel Sandilands raak, verander in goud. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maar dit is sy laaste rol as Freddy Greyling in Desert Rose<\/i> wat jou laat besef hierdie akteur met sy unieke sangstem hoef nie vir een van Hollywood se akteurs terug te staan nie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neil is baie opgewonde om Onrus sy nuwe \u201chuis\u201d te noem en het aan Hermanus Times<\/i> vertel hoe hy besluit het om hom in die Overberg te kom vestig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTydens Covid het ek my terug in Afrika bevind en ek was in die eiendomsmark ge\u00efnteresseerd. Ek het \u2019n bietjie rondgery en besigtigings in en om die Overstrand en Overberg gedoen. Onrus het heelwat voordele ingehou vir wat ek in gedagte gehad het. Eerstens, die betrokke woning het nogal met my gesels, maar die dorpie self het hierdie hibride-tipe gevoel in die opsig dat dit klein genoeg is om die burgerlikheid van \u2019n klein dorpie te behou, maar terselfdertyd ook redelik anoniem is, siende heelwat mense bloot deurbeweeg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDie infrastruktuur werk oor die algemeen goed. Die nodige dienste is byderhand. Ek is minder as twee uur van Kaapstad se internasionale lughawe af. Die natuurskoon, die stilte, die ou halogeen-straatligte . . . Intussen het ek ook uitsonderlike mense ontmoet; so all good,\u201d<\/span>het hy ges\u00ea<\/span><\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dis die eerste keer in \u2019n lang tyd dat hy min of meer van een sentrale plek af funksioneer aangesien hy die afgelope drie jaar meestal in die buiteland as akteur gewerk het. Volgens hom sien hy daarna uit om nou, as die tyd dit toelaat, rustig by sy huis te wees. \u201cDie toer en die Afrikaanse musiek-aanbod is werklik \u2019n liefde. Indien ek tuis is, wat partykeer maar min is, geniet ek dit veral om in die tuin te werk. Ek hoop om \u2019n voetval in die buiteland te behou, maar ook om stigtende werk in Suid-Afrika te doen \u2013 hopelik in hierdie taal. Ek het nog heelwat estetiese vorme wat ek sou wou aanpak, maar dis ook vir my belangrik om sekere seisoene in \u2019n lewe te erken. Ek hou daarvan om burgerlik te wees . . . \u2019n goeie buurman, en vir die gemeenskap daar te wees. Dis hoekom ek die toer hier begin. Dis \u2019n manier om uit te reik. Alles is vir my belewenisse wat ek sou kon omvorm in estetika. Miskien gebeur die novelle hier in Onrus. Dis hoeka die plek van Jan Rabie en Uys Krige.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neil se voete is plat op die aarde en, soos hy s\u00ea, kyk hy nie eintlik op na enigiemand nie, \u201cwant jy weet, almal het maar voete van klei . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEk het geweldige waardering vir en vind aanklank met die algemene mense op straat, wat steeds in staat is tot die rein gebaar. Ek sien so baie van diesulkes. Mense wat alles daarvoor vyl het, onbaatsugtig bly, om desondanks die uitdagings van die \u2018normale gang van sake\u2019 hier in Suid-Afrika skouer aan die wiel te sit en te help bou; onbesoedeld te bly. Heroes <\/i>het ek maar min van. Hulle sal waarskynlik tel onder musici en letterkundiges \u2013 Dylan en Dostoevsky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oor sy persoonlike lewe swyg Niel en vertel dat hy gewoond is aan die atomiese, anomaliese bestaan. \u201cEk woon op my eie en die 30-sekonde-re\u00ebl bly van toepassing. Gegewe die aard van my werk \u2013 ek is \u2019n projekwerker \u2013 is mobiliteit belangrik. Ek moet binne \u2019n oogwink \u2019n bepaling kan maak soos om vir nege maande in Nieu-Seeland of Kanada te gaan werk. Dit maak ongelukkig troeteldiere \u2019n onmoontlike oorweging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hy vertel dat hy wel vo\u00eblvoerders aangeskaf het en sorg mooi vir die vo\u00ebls in die omgewing. \u201cHier was al \u2019n uil en \u2019n kaalwangvalk,\u201d vertel hy trots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
