A group of protesters marched from Zwelihle last week to hand a memorandum with issues relating to foreign nationals residing in the area over to Overstrand Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Approximately 50 people took part in the march, organised by Operation Dudula, which started at the sports field in Zwelihle and headed towards Swartdam Road, before hitting the R43\/Main Road and it concluded at the municipality\u2019s head office in Harmony Lane, Hermanus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Operation Dudula was established in Soweto, but has since spread to other parts of the country. \u201cDudula\u201d means to \u201cforce out\u201d or \u201cknock down\u201d in isiZulu, and refers to the movement\u2019s goal to expel illegal migrants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Operation Dudula states that its campaign is aimed at addressing crime, lack of jobs and poor health services caused by an \u201cinflux of illegal immigrants\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On arrival at around 13:00 the group was received by the Mayor who received the memorandum. It contained a number of issues relating to foreigners, including the allegations that they are operating illegal businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O\u2019Neill reported that the main request is that the municipality should assist in removing foreigners from the township. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis, however, is not the function of a municipality, and the Mayor will reply fully stating the case of the municipality [in such matters],\u201d said O\u2019Neill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After receiving the memorandum, Rabie addressed the group and signed the petition. The march dispersed peacefully. No damage to structures were reported during and after the march.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
