{"id":47294,"date":"2023-10-10T14:37:13","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T12:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/hermanustimes\/storm-hits-tourism-industry-in-the-overberg-hard-20231010\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T05:28:52","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T03:28:52","slug":"storm-hits-tourism-industry-in-the-overberg-hard-20231010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/hermanustimes\/storm-hits-tourism-industry-in-the-overberg-hard-20231010\/","title":{"rendered":"Storm hits tourism industry in the Overberg hard"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A preliminary study by the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism on the impact of the storms and flooding over Heritage Weekend shows the Overberg is one of the areas worst affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/hermanustimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/7fe8defb68f0444490cdcda5b0ad622b.jpg\" alt=\"The tourism industry is struggling after the devas\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"embed image\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is vital for us as the Western Cape Government to get as much information as we can on the impact of the storm, so we are able to prioritise needs,\u201d said Finance and Economic Opportunities MEC Mireille Wenger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department reported 91% of the responses received were from private businesses. \u201cIt is clear that state-owned attractions such as parks, botanical gardens, resorts and camping sites have also been affected,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kleinmond, Hermanus and Betty\u2019s Bay are among the five most affected towns based on responses to the survey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The affected properties are predominantly accommodation establishments (38% of respondents), restaurants\/bars\/cafes (19%), wine tourism attractions (8%), trail networks (6%) and retail stores (6%). The department stated that 63% of respondents indicated they had to close their businesses temporarily as result of the storm damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe tourism and hospitality sector really has been through the wringer over the last few years, but I am heartened by its resilience and unique ability to bounce back,\u201d said Wenger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe sheer tenacity of this sector is remarkable \u2013 every person and business make a much-needed contribution to our economy and job creation. We need to do all we can to address the storm damage with purpose so that we can robustly weather any future extreme events.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister concluded a bumper summer season was expected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo make sure we are ready to welcome visitors across the province I will host an industry-readiness event later this month, bringing key stakeholders from the tourism and hospitality sector together to discuss key preparations for upcoming summer, including the impact of, and mop-up after, the storm.\u201d
