Overstrand Municipality\u2019s Law Enforcement, Fire and Rescue Services, Traffic and the local police united in a show of force on Monday for the Festive Season Safety Plan launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main focus points of this operational plan, said Overstrand\u2019s Director of Protection Services Neville Michaels, is to ensure safety in the Central Business District (CBD), residential areas, nature reserves and on beaches through increased visible foot and vehicle patrols and integrated operations with the police and other role-players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will work hard to give residents and visitors a genuine sense of safety,\u201d Michaels stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Overstrand Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie expressed concern about the \u201cincrease of infringements\u201d that saw Law Enforcement officers respond to 31 956 incidents in the 2022-\u201923 season. To combat this, she said, the municipality has committed additional funding to grow Law Enforcement\u2019s capabilities despite being under financial pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She added that members of the council will not be going into recess, but will be visible and working throughout the holiday season, like the officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Major-General Miriam Mochologi, the Overberg District Police Commissioner, highlighted the importance of joining forces in the fight against crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She went on to emphasise that the police will \u201cleave no stone unturned\u201d when it comes to fighting gender-based violence (GBV), abuse of vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, and the increasing number in child rapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will oppose the bail applications of those who commit those heinous crimes, push for harsh sentences and ensure that they face the full might of the law,\u201d Mochologi stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Councillor Clinton Lerm reminded the officials that they serve as ambassadors for the area and are the first line of defence but urged them to be extra vigilant regarding their own safety as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
