The Overberg boasts many artists, yet losing any of them leaves a gap felt by so many in the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
One such figure was celebrated author and illustrator Niki Daly, who died on 15 January at age 77.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lovers of children\u2019s books, art and music came to know Daly as their most successful South African exponent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
His books are published locally and abroad, and he was shortlisted for the prestigious Hans Christian Anderson Award and recently nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Award. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Niki believed that \u2018South Africans, regardless of race and culture, are more alike than we are different\u2019 and this belief inspired him to use his artistic talent to celebrate inclusivity and creativity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daly lived with his wife Jude, also an illustrator, in Kleinmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NB Publishers stated it was \u201chonoured to have been part of Niki\u2019s literary journey.\u201d From his popular Jamela<\/i> series to the most recent reprint of Not So Fast Songololo<\/i> (2023), his art honours the imaginative powers of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His publisher Michelle Cooper said: \u201cJoy for life runs through Niki Daly\u2019s books like a golden thread, probably best embodied by the character of Jamela. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEven in sickness Niki managed to fill his days with joy. He lived a mindful life before it became a buzz word.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA true artist, ever creative, Niki was still working on nikigami objects and sketch books for his granddaughter until recently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
