Golf Course should not be despoiled: A resolution concerning the proposed new main road through Hermanus was passed at the last committee meeting of the Hermanus Publicity Association held at the Marine Hotel. Mr J. H. S. Withycombe presided. Mr. E. C. Colbeck felt that emphasis should be laid on the old-world charm of Hermanus and the tendency to destroy this charm by the construction of wide roads and ugly electric signs and advertising should be deplored. After discussion the following resolution was passed unanimously, and the Secretary was instructed to forward a copy thereof to the Town Clerk: \u201cThe Association should oppose any development which tends to detract from the old-world atmosphere which is the heritage of Hermanus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe golf course is one of the first attractions at Hermanus and should not be despoiled. It is hoped that in the planning of the town, nothing will be done to detract from this atmosphere in relation to the Golf Course and other amenities of Hermanus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Association feels that coloured electric signs on business premises have endangered the rural atmosphere and the money so expended would be better applied to collective publicity through the Association in attracting visitors to Hermanus during the quiet months of May to September, rather than in individual competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAlso, that the patronage Hermanus enjoys today is attributable to the simplicity of the town and unless this cherished possession is retained, a commercialised sea-side resort will develop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arising from the minutes, the Chairman advised that the matter of the Publicity Office which had been proposed on the site overlooking the Old Harbour had been shelved by the Council for the time being but would be coming up for consideration at the next Council Meeting. It was resolved that a letter be sent from the Association to the Town Clerk strongly recommending that an office be established for the Publicity Association somewhere in Hermanus, without suggesting a place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
